Can't really help with these kinds of problems because it depends on your email client.

You should verify your network configuration allows for internet access by trying to ping www.google.com. If that works, then all I can say is your email settings are wrong for your email provider.

thanks cyberjack

I can ping google from a shell from inside LAN web interface

email settings are same as my macbook mail client. What sort of things should I be looking for in terms of << it depends on your email client>>?
I am not seeing how an email client is relevant (other than the settings themselves , which are only ISP server side parameters)
I'll try some other email account equivalents and see what happens

FIXED
both the root email (account-users-view users) AND the from email (System-settings-email) need to be the same account (me@somedomain.com)

looking at the manual: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Settings

it has the default entry root@freenas.local
One interprets this as the 'from' entry is acting as an alias to the root account, which has had its email set to a real account (me@somedomain.com)

The hint text in the manual also state that test emails are sent to root account.
