Hi,

I'm playing with FreeNAS, getting used to the look and feel etc... The pdf guide is excellent BTW.

While creating and exteneding volumes using 5 drives for each task etc..., it takes a while, ~3 minutes.

On the console, I see;

GEOM_ELI: Encryption; AES-XTS 256
GEOM_ELI: Crypto: hardware

I didn't enable encryption or much of anything else. I did enable atime as my env requires it.

I read were 9.1 beta had it on by def but I'm using 9.1 rel.

Any thoughts?

That's for the swap space.....

And no version ever released had encryption enabled by default.

Nope. You didn't misread, but you did misunderstand. :)

When a drive is setup in a zpool it creates a 2GB swap partition seconds before the zpool is created. So to the casual observer(yourself) you will think encryption is being used. It was just that the swap partitions were created and enabled at the same time. :)

I know it was swap because swap uses AES-256 while geli uses AES-128. So its easy to determine which encryption applies to what. :)

Yep, you are correct. found mention of this on several pages of the wonderful FreeNAS pdf. I'm simply delighted on how well documented it is. really, top notch.

You mentioning swap allowed me to find it and read up proper. Thanks Cyberduck :)
