New Ryzen Build

Hey all,

I thought a while ago in a forum far far away there was a thread to show off your builds. Must be gone now so I'm posting it here. If it's still around and I totally missed it my apologies, please move thread.
I've been running FreeNAS on less than ideal hardware for ~7 years now. Never had any problems and only had to reboot it 3 times (Memory upgrade, we moved to a new house, and a software upgrade).
FreeNAS-11.2-U7
MOBO: ASUS Micro ATX P8B75-M with RocketRaid 1640 & 1740
CPU: Intel G1610 Ivy Bridge
HDD: 4x 3TB WD30EFRX RED RAIDZ1
HDD: 4x 500GB Seagate Barracuda RAIDZ1
RAM: 4x 8GB G.SKILL DDR3
CASE: NZXT Source 220
PSU: Thermaltake XP550 NP
UPS: APC Smart-UPS 1000 VA

Like I said some pretty tired hardware but truly reliable all around. Since my one 7TB pool is just about full and I didn't want to put more drives in this hardware it's time to build something new. I'm liking this build a lot so far. I went back and forth on buying a Synology, QNAP or Dorbo but I always found myself back at FreeNAS. The hardware freedom and customizing is hard to pass up. Bonus this build is way cheaper.
Now I know how this forum is and everyone has opinions. So let's all continue to be respectful during these hard times in the world. Thanks for the help over the years and with picking out some of the hardware. There doesn't seem to be many Ryzen builds on here so I'm excited about that. It seems like most of the earlier issues have been resolved.
There's a bunch of great cases out there but I've always had my eye on the Antec 1200. I like the desktop form factor rather than rack mount and the drive count is prefect. Don't mind the dust, it's a vintage case.

MOBO: ASRock Rack MB X470D4U
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
HDD: 4x 3TB WD Red
HDD: 4X 4TB HGST
HDD OS: 64GB M.2
RAM: 32GB ECC
PSU: 750 Watt Antec (Came with the case but will be upgraded once things are back in stock)
Case: Antec 1200 V2
Dell H310
IBM ServerRaid 16 port
4x Rosewill 3 x 5.25-Inch to 4 x 3.5-Inch Hot-swap bays

I'm waiting on some Noctua fans and some more sas breakout cables to come in then it should be ready to start moving data. This will mostly be for movie / tv streaming with the Emby server plugin. Maybe a few VMs.

One thing I didn't realize is that the stock AMD cooler interferes with the memory slots. I'll have to find a new cooler at some point.

Anyways here are some pics. Cable are a hot mess for now from the older PSU cables.

Cheers - have a great holiday weekend.

That's a lot of drive bays. Any issues with C6/Cool'N'Quiet with that Ryzen build? As in, did you need to turn that off to get stable?

Not yet but this hasn't been running for any prolonged period of time yet since it's not finished.

When you get up and running, be sure to keep an eye on your temperatures. If you are not using all the disk bays, I would consider mounting one of the fans on the back as an exhaust fan. It will help air movement through the case.

Yeah so I'm replacing all the current fans on the hot swap bays and adding 2 rear exhaust fans.

If you are going to run 8 drives only, you may not need so many fans. I would be very surprised if you needed more than one fan behind each cage that you are using, and one exhaust fan. Don't forget, these cases were originally designed for gaming, including support for high end CPU's and graphics cards that are major heat generators. You don't have those concerns.

Looks like a fun build. Good luck.

It will be 8 drives for now but probably not more then 12 total for mass storage. I plan to use the bottom hot swap bay for some short term storage / cache for Emby and other stuff on VMs.

No mention of using TrueNAS Core 12 Beta (or final release if it arrives before you get built), which should provide much more reliability with Ryzen...

Have you, btw, found a document that explains what that means in technical detail? What exactly is improved in the 12.1 kernel to support Ryzen better?

Sorry I don't know much about TrueNAS. I assumed it was a new flavor of FreeNAS (paid) or a new enterprise level. I'll look into it more out of curiosity.

Found this in release notes though I don’t know how this relates to “stability”:

The amdsmn(4) and amdtemp(4) drivers have been updated to attach toAMD® Ryzen 2™ host bridges. [r340446]

The amdtemp(4) driver has been updated to fix temperature reporting for AMD® 2990WX CPUs. [r340447]

Sorry to revive this thread, but which memory did you use for this build? Also, what did you do for a GPU?

Not my build, and: "ASRock Rack MB X470D4U " this has IPMI, no separate GPU needed. It's really nice.

ECC memory, choose what you like as long as it's ECC UDIMM DDR4. The stuff SuperMicro sells will likely work great. Samsung, Crucial/Micron, will all be fine. Just make sure it's unbuffered.

I used Kingston ksm26ed8/16me for the memory.
Also as Yorick stated I am using the ASRock Rack MB X470D4U which does have IPMI but also has a built in VGA port. No GPU required.

Also for anyone else coming across this post. Build has been 100% solid. No issues at all.

Nice I actually have this same Antec tower case from one of my previous PC builds I no longer use. I may use this for my next build which may include this same ASRock MB! It looks like Ryzen 5/7/9 are all supported too, then add a few HGST drives for the zpool!

@ITGuy1024

I'm looking into doing something like this but with a 1700x I have laying around.

What's the idle wattage like on that build and did you have any issues getting the dell H310 to work? (assuming it's flashed to IT mode?)

The case and hot-swap bays look nice. But at least where I live it would cost me north of 500 Euros. Has anyone found something cheaper? The used Supermicro towers seem overpriced compared to the rackmount cases ...
