Ok the ZFS is a good thing but we still need to assess the hardware. What CPU, RAM, Motherboard, HBA, etc are you using. 64bit doesn't mean much anymore. My phone is 64bit. :p
It will work* but you at the minimum for memory. Also that thing is a bit of a space heater... :p Personally, I would document all of your configuration and do a clean install of 11.1U4 Just pop the drives until the install is done just to be safe. On the first 11.1U4 boot you will see a setup wizard CLOSE THE WIZARD! From here you can follow the user guide to import your old pool (you re inserted the drives right?).
You didn't mention anything about your HBA or RAID card so that makes me think your still using the Perc RAID. Be warned, this is STRONGLY not advised.
As always, make backups before doing any major work on your system.
*The system will work but may not run VMs and will be terribly power inefficient.
Thank you very much for all this valuable info. Space heater in my 42U rack for my basement :) I created the RAID5 using Freenas and not the PERC for monitoring of the individual discs. Would it be sluggish with 8GB? It my personal file storage and not an enterprise deployment. I'm second guessing my choice now...
The 8GB is fine for light duty. If you were running more than file serving and torrent clients I would say you need to upgrade but aside from power and heat, it will serve files fine. You should have no issues saturating a 1gbe link.
