I have a newly set up FreeNAS 8.2 server.

I can set up shares (Windows only for now) and they show up fine on the connected work stations.

But, when I add files to the share, each file show sup in every share have.

Example: I create shares:1, 2 and 3

I upload 5 files to share 1.

When I look in share 2 and 3, they also have the same 5 files.

Then, if I erase 2 of the files from share 2, they are also erased from shares 1 and 3.

It is like they all have different names, but they are just mirrors of one another. Or, they all point to the same files with out being in different folders.

Thanks for any clues to understand this and how to correct it (I am assuming that this is not normal behaviour).

It sounds like you created 3 different CIFS shares, but pointed them all to the same actual mountpoint. you need to line out where you shares point to.

Hello

Thanks for the help.

I was able to figure it out between your comment and my friends help.

It was more because of not understanding how FreeNAS works than there being a problem.

Is there any chance you could explain this for an absolute noob?

sure. i will do my best, even though i am pretty crappy with words.

lets say you create a new 'DRIVE' on your freenas box. lets call it 'TANK'
your newly created 'drive' is mounted at /mnt/tank

you go into windows (CIFS) shares and click ADD
name it whatever you like, lets call it SHARE1, and the path you select is /mnt/tank
new share: SHARE2.
if you also point this path to /mnt/tank, you are effectively creating 2 'differently NAMED' shares, but in reality, they are going to the same directory in the system, which is /mnt/tank

of course when you look at it from another computer over the network browser, you will see 2 different names, but logically they are connected to the same exact folder.

instead of doing it this way, you should perhaps create a directory inside /mnt/tank called share1 (/mnt/tank/share1) and share that out as SHARE1 in your windows shares and likewise with SHARE2 (/mnt/tank/share2)

i prefer using datasets, but thats up to you to read the documentation and figure out if you want to use straight-forward directories and shares, or if you want to utilize ZFS with datasets

the best thing you can do is throw together a small virtual setup, or throw a box together and play around with the different options. something with no critical data on it that you can practice your methods and build a plan for your future FreeNAS box.

hope that makes a bit of sense
