I received my FreeNAS mini XL around 2 weeks back, still have not set it up
1. because I'm still reading through getting started
2. because my boot device (SATA DOM) is not even shipped yet.

I'm planning to go ahead and install freeeNAS on USB drive over weekend and setup system.
After I receive my SATA DOM is it easy to replace USB drive with SATA DOM? (Just install freeNAS on SATA DOM and done) maybe I need to create all datasets again?

Is that all or there are other things I need to look for, I'll be installing 3 jails as well but I can wait few days for that.

Very simple:
  • Download your config file from the web UI
  • Install to your new boot device
  • Upload your saved config file via the web UI

You mean iX shipped it without the DOM? That makes no sense, what the hell happened there?

I concur, that's very odd. Did you contact iX regarding the missing SATA DOM? If so, that's some poor QA work.

Sorry for confusion, but I bought SATA DOM somewhere else (not at iX, I bought at memory depot I guess the link is in one of the guides) , in fact I didn't even know until this point that iX sell SATA DOM else I would just buy it with mini XL

The Mini XL comes with a SATA DOM already installed and should have whatever the latest version of FreeNAS was at the time the system was built. If it didn't come with one you should put in a support ticket at support.ixsystems.com.

Does it come with one even if I didn't buy HDDs? (I only got freeNAS mini XL).
I've not even checked and assumed it doesn't have one, I should check.

Yes, even with no hard drives, it should still bootup from the boot device that is *always* included with every FreeNAS Mini/Mini XL purchase.

I feel so stupid right now, I definitely have boot device. I may just cancel my current order for SATA DOM.

Thanks a lot

I'm not sure if I should continue asking questions in this thread.
But one of my HDD doesn't show up (I've 8x3TB WD red), I can only see 7.
I thought if drive is bad Storage -> View disks shows bad in front of drive.

This is still before adding any volume / formatting etc.
[EDIT]: If it is better to start new thread instead, please let me know I would move this question to new thread.

It probably would be best to start a new thread, as this is a different issue. But if a drive is completely dead, the system wouldn't be able to see it to mark it as bad in Storage -> View Disks.

yes turned out it was dead, replaced it with one 2TB but obviously can't put it up in RAID since I've 7x3TB (in RAIDZ3).
Connected 2TB just to feel good about it I guess and I may use it for some other purpose (don't know yet).

I'm not going to start new thread for HDD issue, not sure how to mark this thread closed/answered etc.

Well, you could do an array of 1 x 2 TB + 7 x 3 TB in RAIDZn, but the capacity of the pool would be limited based on the 2 TB drive. Whenever you get the 3 TB drive replaced, you could replace the 2 TB drive with it and your pool would expand automagically.
