Hi ppl,

we have a machine with 4 SATA disks in RAID 6 with ZFS and it is working perfectly! :)
But I want to use an external disk to make backups to move far away.

Any advice to do this?
- type of disks
- using usb?
- external dock box to plug disks?
- ???

thanks in advance for any help.

Hopefully you mean RAIDZ2, and not hardware RAID6. The latter would be a mistake.
type of disks
Can you be more specific?
using usb?
eSATA is a better option than USB, because you will have no trouble running SMART checks and tests on the backup disk(s).
external dock box to plug disks?
Try to find a dock that doesn't have a port multiplier. For example, if it's a dual dock, but it has two eSATA ports, then there is no port multiplier. If it's a single dock, no port multiplier.

Hi Robert,

thank you very much for your reply.

Hopefully you mean RAIDZ2, and not hardware RAID6. The latter would be a mistake.

I mean 4 disks in RAID6 provided by a hardware controller, but this is a mistake because the when I have created a volume in FreeNAS I'm doing the same redundancy twice, right?
I want to replace a disk if there is a hardware problem.

Can you be more specific?

Ok,

Try to find a dock that doesn't have a port multiplier. For example, if it's a dual dock, but it has two eSATA ports, then there is no port multiplier. If it's a single dock, no port multiplier.

I want an external disk and every week make a backup and save this disk outside the facilities.

all the best,

José

I personally have a middle man, which is a Debian system, using rsync to backup data on to an external drive on a nightly basis. My external drives are encrypted using LUKS as the disks are stored off-site.
