Hello everyone,

I'm trying to install freenas 9.10 on a standard ibm rack server here with an Intel XEON E5-2407 cpu.
After the installer has started I'm getting this:

panic: running without device atpic requires a local APIC
CPUID=0

Belonging to this error I can only find problems related to installation on virtual box but I try to install on a real hardware box.

Can this be caused by some strange BIOS settings?
I used to have an older freenas version 9.2.something running on this box.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Some specs above and beyond a processor would be mighty helpful. At least a model number, mayhap? Really, a full, detailed spec breakdown would be the minimum to diagnose this problem.

Fireware and UEFI updated to the latest version available.
I could not find ACPI settings in BIOS and also tried to reset to factory default settings but the error stays the same :(

The site you linked shows that is has an IBM ServeRaid M1115. I *think* that this card may be okay to use, but have no personal experience. However, it is discussed in here.

Are you just trying to install without any other drives attached? Also, what are you using to install the OS on (USB, HDD, SSD)?

sorry for the minimum of information!
I'm trying to install to an 8 GB USB stick and have 8 x 1TB SATA drives inside this box which has 32 GB RAM.

The ServeRais is already cross flashed. Maybe I'll have to update its firmware, too.

But that's not the problem I am facing at the moment.

The problem is when I boot with freenas installer 9.10 from DVD I get this error:

panic: running without device atpic requires a local APIC
CPUID=0

after the installer is loading and I can not see the reason for this.
I used this DVD several time last week and it worked fine then.

Couple suggestions:
  • Try to install on a HDD or SSD (may be an issue with the USB itself)
  • There is a mention of using "loader tunable hw.x2apic_enable=0", but this pertains to FreeBSD
  • Try to install an older version of FreeNAS and see if you get the same issue
    • If not, then try to update it to the latest and see if that works
    • If you do, then it more than likely is HW related and you would need to focus more there
  • If possible, install FreeNAS to the USB on another system (without any other drives attached). If it installs fine on that USB, then take the USB stick and attach it to the "7158E1G" system and see if it boots up fine
    • This will also let you know if there is an issue with the USB stick or not

Sorry, but did you even read my problem above?
It is not a problem with the USB itself, it is a problem that the kernel panics before starting the installer:

panic: running without device atpic requires a local APIC
CPUID=0

And yes, an older version is working as I also wrote.

I checked event logs in BIOS but there aren't any messages

I found this in your second link -> "Note that APIC is something completely different from ACPI - just one of the confusing sets of acronyms in the computer industry."

So my problem looks like having something to do with APIC not ACPI

K, so two options:
  1. Install the older version and update it to 9.10 and see if things work fine
    • If not, then open a Bug so the Devs can chime in
  2. Open a Bug so the Devs can chime in; stating which older version installer works and the issues you have with the 9.10 version

But as far as I see there is only an iso with the installer and no update image any more.
So how should I update the older installation if the installer can't be run?

Did you use the DVD in the same machine? Or different machines? Have you successfully booted other DVD's in this machine?

Have you tried these steps from the manual (http://doc.freenas.org/9.3/freenas_install.html#performing-the-installation)
Note: if the installer does not boot, check that the installation device is listed first in the boot order in the BIOS. When booting from a CD, some motherboards may require you to connect the CD device to SATA0 (the first connector) in order to boot from CD. If the installer stalls during bootup, double-check the SHA256 hash of the .iso file. If the hash does not match, re-download the file. If the hash is correct, try burning the CD again at a lower speed or try writing the file to a different USB stick.

I used the DVD in different machines and tried it with two different DVD drives in this machine.
Yes I booted other DVDs for firmware updates today.

And I installed 3 NAS boxes with this DVD this and last week.

In the WebGUI? Check the forums, there is a order that one would want to upgrade in, but I don't recall it off the top of my head.

is there a chance to set a proxy for update from webgui?
Looks like the installed 9.2.1.5 version doesn't have this entry in network global configuration
