Hmm, sorry I never ran anything lower than 9.3.1, but here is a link to the 9.2.1 User Guide:
http://doc.freenas.org/9.2.1/freenas9.2.1_guide.pdf

There is a section in there called "Using the GUI to Upgrade" that you may be able to use. Keep in mind I am not 100% sure, but you may want to upgrade to 9.3.1 first; then 9.10 (but I may be wrong on this)...

Here is a link to all the downloadable versions: https://download.freenas.org/

Looks like I finally made it but it was a long journey.

I do not understand why I always have trouble with freenas on this creepy box.

What I did:
  1. Install 9.2.1.5 on a new stick since the old one had only 4GB.
  2. Update to 9.3 went wrong using the update image.
  3. Then I made it somehow to use 9.3 installer for installation which also failed on first two tries.
  4. Tried to update the crossflashed LSI HBA to the same version as the driver uses which was also a bit difficult since this box does not accept booting a freedos image for flashing like the three other boxes I tried.
  5. Finally updated the HBA from inside freenas with BSD installer (great idea to have sas2flash preinstalled).
  6. Last but not least updated freenas to 9.10 using the online update mechanism.

Thanks for your help!

I think next time this box makes problems I'll throw it out of the window.
