hi all,
so i noticed my freenas mini system not responding and sure enough the system had frozen for some reason. so my only choice was to power off then back on. on reboot it would power on for like 2 seconds spin up the power supply fan, then power back off.

does this mean a motherboard or RAM issue? hopefully someone can give me a recommendation on what i should try next.

thanks,

Difficult to guestimate what could have caused this problem.
From my experience, a non properly seated RAM stick would generate this sort of behavior.
However, what would randomly cause a RAMstick to jump out of position (ever so slightly) would be unprobable, but ...stranger things have happened.

tonight, i suppose i will try removing my memsticks 1 by 1 to see if one has gone bad or needs re-seat. system is not that old though i would hate to find out a ram stick has gone bad.

How old is the system? I'm not sure exactly the scope of support iXSystems gives for the FreeNAS Mini, but this seems like it should fall within it, as it's almost certainly a hardware problem of some flavor (my vote would be the power supply, but I wouldn't bet a lot on that).

about exactly 2 years old, when the freenas mini first came out.

ok so i think i may have found the issue? i was able to log in remotely through the IPMI port, and one of the sensors, "BAT" is reading 0 volts. does this mean the CMOS battery is dead and needs replacing? see attached screenshot

hmm, well i replaced the battery and still no go. i got it to fully boot up once. then shutdown and restarted to make sure all was good, then back to square one. my IPMI screen is now showing the new battery as dead too. so now i don't think that is the problem. cant think of what else it might be.
