After stating that it has an Unknown Filesystem it drops me into Grub. I have searched but I can't find anything that tells me what my issue is.

I am updating a system that is currently running 9.1.1, so it's not a compatibility issue. I have tried the built in CDROM and an external USB2 CDROM. Neither works to install off of. I have burned three CD's and downloaded the image several times in an attempt to see if I just got unlucky.

Any ideas here on what I can try next?

Should I try a different slightly older image to download?

Sorry usually this all just works without a hitch for me. So I am at a loss at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried installing to a different stick? The old one may have given up the ghost.

Ok tried that. Doesn't work. New stick, different boot images, etc... I wouldn't be so concerned but this server has been updated multiple times from early version 8 all that way to what I was hoping was the recent version, and this is the first issue I have had.

Other thoughts welcome. If I am doing something wrong love to learn what so I don't do it again.

I have about 10 FreeNAS servers running for various uses and usually they just work.

Thanks

You did not say what version you are installing.
You said updating, but you meant new fresh install?
You were running version 9.1.1 and you wish to now
use the lastest FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201509282017
is that right? Have you verified the download file?
At what point during the install does this error occur?
Did you re-set the boot order after install and remove
the CD from the optical drive
?

Is your boot order (in the bios) configured to boot from the optical drive?

I have tried multiple versions. From the one you get to from the button on the front of the website to the latest 9.3.1/latest/x64 Stable. None of them work for me.

Yes I have tried XXX2017. Multiple downloads from multiple sources. I have NOT verified and will go do that next.

I have set the boot order to be CD-ROM then the USB stick and then nothing since that's all I want this to boot from. But it's possible that's not working right. I will double check that as well just to make sure.

Thanks!

FYI, I never get it installed.

Here's the order of events.

1. I have an older version already up and running just fine.
2. I downloaded FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201509282017
3. Burned to a CD
4. Plugged USB CD into server checked boot order, and rebooted Server.
5. I get the above picture as a result. So I never get the new version installed....

Thanks

Have you tried Windows to burn a DVD instead of a CD?
Did you check the "Verify disc after burning" box so the program
checks the iso image upon completion?
disc-image-burner.jpg
At this point, it's the downloaded iso that is bad
or the optical drive and/or the media is pooched.

NOTE:
If your flash drive was bad, the FreeNAS install
would stop when it couldn't find an install target,
but it should work fine up to that point

This is almost certainly a boot order issue. Set it to boot FIRST from USB, because you can always unplug those, then CD-ROM second.

Will do later today. Opps.

As to CD Drives, I have used 2 different ones. 4 Different images, 2 Different machines to download to. Booting off internal and external CD's.

So here's a weird one for you. I put the CD/DVD player plugged into my PC and I get the exact same message on the screen....

I will get specs of all machines involved and all steps I have taken.

I am positive it's something stupid I am doing, but I can't seem to sort it out.

After Church I will post all of that info.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Ok gave up on all of this bought a new MoBo and new USB stick.

Turns out the the new version of FreeNAS broke support for SanDISK USB sticks, so that was strike one, in doing research the MoBo I had reported problems in reading USB sticks for bootup (not sure why for 3 years I had no problems, but ... ) strike two.

I wasn't wasting more time. So the only thing I can say is that SanDISK USB's have an issue with the new builds ( it's been reported ), and that a EVGA 680i SLI board has issues with USB in general.

Hope that helps someone else. But I never got to a fix other than replacing pretty much everything.

Seriously?!?!? How can this all be so finicky? I just bought 2-16GB Sandisk Cruzer Fits for the express purpose of installing FreeNAS. So now what? I posted a little while before my reply here about not being able to get past GRUB, but this is AFTER I have installed FreeNAS onto it from CD.

I have Sandisk Cruzer fits on my box, as do about 50000 other people.

They're fine.

Sir, in fairness, I believe the claim was that "Sandisk USB sticks do not work anymore". This is not even remotely true, since we have at least 50000 deployments of FreeNAS 9.3 booting from Sandisk USB sticks. At least.

Now, it appears that the Sandisk Cruzer *ULTRA* 3.0, itself, has this issue, which is a newer model, and not the one we have been specifically recommending in the forums (which is the Sandisk Cruzer Fit 2.0).

That's what the bug report appears to stipulate. Saying that it has "broken Sandisk USB sticks" is a gigantic overstatement. As far as we know, we have a problem with one model class.

I hear you. But I spent hours trying everything I could. New SanDisk USB sticks, as well. I tried even after I swapped out the motherboard and still no go. This all worked the minute I put a different brand of USB stick in. Your mileage may vary. I can only report on MY experience.

I too have 10's of these sticks working just fine. But I am not going to update to the latest version of FreeNAS until I know for sure that this issue isn't one any longer.

I was/am using SanDisk Fits in all of my older FreeNAS units, and NEVER had an issue with them. I put the latest 9.3 STABLE (several different images of this after this first one) and the install worked but it would not boot after. I tried others. So I tried a new SanDisk, same thing. I tried a third etc.. Same thing. Went out and bought a newer on so that I made sure I wasn't in possession of a bad batch, and that one had the same issues.

I bought a different USB stick and no issue at all. Worked just fine.

I will try this all again with a new image when something new is released, but that's been my experience.

Perhaps I was just unlucky, but I stand by what I said. I could never get it to work on my SanDisk Fit, but was immediately able to when I switched to a different USB stick.

You tell me what I did wrong.

Not trying to be a pain, just reporting my experience. Thanks.

I tried a 8Gb SanDisk Fit a 16Gb SanDisk Fit and a 64Gb one. I would love for this to work for me.

PS I love SanDisk Fits, and love my FreeNAS. So I really do want this to work. It's just not for me at the moment.

Please report the precise SKU's of the thumb drives you believe are not working.
