No change to root password, but installed latest 9.3 updates. Now get message "Please enter a correct Username and password." Suggestions, please.

Maybe something got corrupted on your boot device. If you have console access you can use option 7 to reset the root password.

Thank you, Robert, for reminding me about option 7. I had forgotten.

Is it possible that a mirrored pair of boot devices could get corrupted? I have scrubbed the boot devices, and the ZPool reports indicated zero errors.

Anyway, in desperation I tried a lot of passwords and got one to work, my actual password but capitalized. The system now requires that I enter my password in uppercase even though it was entered in lowercase. Once logged in I changed my password and made sure it was entered completely in lowercase. However, my system requires it in uppercase to successfully login. Seems incredible, but I have confirmed this multiple times now.

Thank you, anodos.

I have questioned the cat extensively. Although it is clearly lying, I am satisfied that it was not sitting on the shift key during my most recent tests.

Seriously, I have reentered the password now from two computers (Win 7, OS X) and three browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari) and then tested login from the three browsers and an iPad. The phenomenon is thoroughly reproducible. On my FreeNAS system a root password entered with only lowercase characters must be entered in uppercase to successfully login. No other applications are displaying any case sensitivity problems.

Have you tried entering a completely new password in lower case? Have you tried entering it from the console? Otherwise one explanation is that it simply isn't being changed for some reason.

I may have stumbled across this too, but really didn't investigate.

I just nuked the password via IPMI, entered 123456 and changed it again in the GUI.
