Hi All,
I have build my first NAS it is not so perfect but this is what i had for 100$.
I had IBM IntelliStation M Pro 9229.
Intel Core 2 processor E6700.
4*750 on SAS controller.
1*750 on SATA.
1*160 on SATA (Running OS).
4GB RAM (I know that ZFS recommended 8GB on the way 4 more will arrive this week).
RAIDZ1 with 5*750.
1Ggigabit switch.
So i configure it and its working very well till yesterday, once im connecting to the GUI its taking about 2 min to load the left panel of it:

I reboot the system and now its seems to work fine but not sure if this is the solution to do it each time that such thing happen.
I used to run FreeNAS on VMWare workstation for about a week to test it before i start to build the physical, and i had the same problem there very frequently.
Will appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks.

FreeNAS doesn't "recommend" at least 8GB RAM. It requires it. http://www.freenas.org/faq/

Wait until you have at least 8GB RAM installed then see if the problem persists.

Okie thanks,
I notice that the problem appears once im updating the DNS server of the freenas, if i pun there my router this problem happens again, once i change it to google dns 8.8.4.4 its working fine.
Any ideas (Except hanging it on the RAM)?

Thanks for the reply but following your link it is actually recommended, the required is 4GB :)

What!?

From the website:
To use FreeNAS, you'll need standard PC hardware with a 64-bit processor and at least 8GB of RAM, a 4GB USB Flash drive, and a FreeNAS installation file.

Seems to say 8GB of RAM to me....

Scroll to the bottom of the FAQ. You're assuming that people actually read the parts that don't contain bullet points. :) Though there seems to be a bit of semantic confusion between "requirement" and "recommendation".
the FreeNAS system requirements recommend a minimum of 8GB of RAM
this just hurts my head. Why couldn't they just write "FreeNAS with ZFS requires 8GB RAM".

Yep you are right but it is under the RECOMMENDED section, if you scroll a little bit more you will find the requirment section.

Which is clarified if you read paragraph 7. "If you have less than 8GB of RAM (especially 4GB and below), UFS is a viable alternative." Implied is that ZFS is not viable under 8GB. This is a somewhat roundabout way of saying that the 4GB requirement is related to UFS. If you use ZFS, the minimum is 8GB.

Yeah, so two things are gonna be changed, hopefully today.

1. The 4GB requirement is going to be changed to say 8GB. Technically if you install any currently available RELEASE version you could do UFS.
2. We're being a bit proactive with just not recommending UFS since UFS is dead in 9.3, which is going to hit BETA in just a few days. Choosing UFS basically means "I intend to use FreeNAS 9.2.1.8 forever and ignore any and all security risks that might be a result of FreeNAS because I'm stupid". Yes, I'm being facetious but I think I've made my point. :P

Anyway now it's working fine i upgraded my router firmware and its working well now so it wasn;t RAM issue, hopefully next week i will get the 8GB ECC kit (yes it is supported by the M.B), also i thinking to move to NAS4free WDYT?

I don't have an opinion. I don't specifically answer questions about NAS4Free because I'm not a specialist in that OS.
