HighPoint Rocket 2720SGL

Hey there,

I got the R2720SGL yesterday by mail. So I installed it and tried to get it to work. It wasn't recognized by FreeNas. So I searched for solutions and found the threads about adding the FreeBSD driver manually. It still didn't work. I asked JohnKnee, who is fairly active on this controller in the forum and he told that I don't need to install anything on FreeNas 9.2, which he is still using. So I reinstalled 9.2.1.2 as I couldn't find 9.2 to download and upgraded the Firmware/BIOS on the controller to the latest available version, as he suggested, to 4.0.0.1808. After booting up FreeNas still isn't recognizing any disks connected through this controller.
Now I searched the logs and found this:

Now is my question: why is it recognizing the controller but is failing to verify the controller? Does anybody know how to fix this?
Because I've read about many where it's running without any problems.

That's what I got from it. I'm wondering what this one device connected through the hpt27xx is.
FYI I've connected 4 HDs with the controller at he moment.
The BIOS of the card is showing me the HDs and the BTX is showing me them too, during startup.

Ok.. ready for some bad news?

There's something about *some* 2720SGLs that just doesn't play with FreeBSD. A few threads from a year or more ago touched on this. They looked identical, they ran the same firmware, but one person had 2 cards, one that worked and one that didn't. When he contacted Highpoint to find out of the "non-working" card was a fake they told him that the serial number is valid and both are authentic as far as they know. He wasn't able to figure out why one worked while the other didn't, but decided that something just isn't right with Highpoint and got something else(presumably M1015s).

To be honest, if you search the forums you'll find tons of threads where the controller has problems. If you had done your homework before purchasing it, I'd have expected you to have not purchased that model. I certainly wouldn't have even if you ignore the guy I just discussed and look at the number of threads where it doesn't work. These kinds of things are things that should "just work" and if it doesn't you should be very very afraid to trust it in your server.

I#ve searched for a good controller before purchasing this but the only one I found working for everybody was the M1015. I own myself a Fujitsu D2607 which is the same LSI underneath. But for some reason my board is not able to flash the card to the HBA version of BIOS. Presumably it will not work with the IBM too.
Do you know which card to purchase if I'm not able to flash it? Because I'm still eligible for refund for the card.

I'm not sure what board you have that won't flash. If I had that problem I'd try to find a board to drop them in just to reflash them. Surely you have a friend or someone that could at least flash the cards for you.

I'd offer to flash them for you if you wanted to pay for the shipping to/from me, but it won't do you particularly much good because the driver version for FreeNAS updates once of twice a year, and that means you need to update your firmware to match the driver version.

This is more for people that find this thread when they are having problems with 2720sgl. This is my observation and I may be wrong so please take it with a grain of salt. Highpoint has released two versions of the 2720sgl (RocketRaid and Rocket).

1) They first came out with a RocketRaid 2720sgl found here (http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/series_rr272x.htm), and these cards had/have native FreeBSD support. Also initially you had to flash the non-raid firmware to get them to work and version 1.2 seemed to work the best for most people. Then last year, they release a single Raid firmware version version 1.5 (http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/CS-PCI-E_2_0_x8_Configuration.html) that was found to work by some and I finally flashed my card to this version. The only con was that it took about 45 seconds longer for it to boot through the raid bios screen during the boot process.

As an aside, I flashed this card with these instructions load.exe /e 0=0 rr2720.v15 and now it scans and loads instantly. I did this after coming across this post here (http://www.overclock.net/t/679056/rocketraid-boot-issues#post_20782203).

With this firmware and card, I have had no issues with FreeNas except I am unable to have FreeNas generate automatic working smartd or have the ability to display the Disk Serial numbers in the View Disk GUI. I did try to get WG (developer) access to my system to fix it but there is an inherent security problem with the current highpointCLI FreeBSD driver so this will not happen until Highpoint fixes this.

2) Highpoint also released a Rocket 2720sgl card (http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/series_r272x.htm). These cards are non-raid to start and never had FreeBSD drivers in the download page, only Windows and Linux (http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA_new/PCI-E_r_2_0_x8_Configuration.html). You can see even the firmware version format is significantly different than the RocketRaid versions (v4.0.0.1808 vs v1.5). It is my opinion that these cards may be using a different or modified chipset that has been giving people problems. I have no way to prove it but that is my guess. Unfortunately by calling these cards 2720sgl it causes great confusion as some people have cards that work and others that don't.

So, if anyone has the Rocket2720sgl that works with FreeNas, it would be great if you could post which firmware version you are using so that others may benefit.

Also if you are considering buying the RocketRaid 2720sgl to use solely with FreeNas don't. Be safe and by the M1015. If you have already bought it and can't return it then hopefully the above post helps.:)

I did work with WG on the Highpoint CLI thing about 18 or so months ago. It's a soup sandwich. I'm the unlucky OP of the highpoint thread, so I'll probably add a comment about the RocketRAID 2720SGL for future readers too since that thread is a sticky.

I am somewhat interested in this now since I seem to distinctly remember the guy that had posted saying that the cards looked identical and had identical firmwares and hardware. But.. I could be confusing it with something else. Who knows.

I can confirm that the Rocket vs RocketRAID explanation is correct. I owned the Rocket and used it under Linux for years and experienced the same issue as the OP when I tried to use it under FreeBSD. The chipset is definitely different but it was 6 months ago so I don't remember the details other than there were no FreeBSD drivers for sure. The fact that the FreeBSD hpt27xx driver recognizes the PCI ID of the Rocket and tries to load is a bug IMO.

Thanks for the answers. I tried to flash the Fujitsu Card at a friend's Computer and it didn't work. It stated something like: "No LSI Card was found". Now I ordered a IBM M1015 from eBay and will flash it. Let's see. I think every other HBA SAS Card is a PIA under FreeNAS.

Piece of advice regarding HBAs: If it's Marvell, assume it's a piece of crap until proven otherwise. Their first SATA 6Gb/a controllers were infamous for being slower than Intel's 3Gb/s controllers...

If you still have the Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 it may well work for you even with the errors you are getting. It is a script error on FreeNas' part that throws up all that stuff at you. The driver has to be accessed via the command line with the following parameters


hpt,x/y/z where x is the number of controllers and y is the number of drives. z does not seem to matter. The RocketRaid can theoretically have 4 controllers on a single bridge so x is a value between 1-4. Each controller can have upto 8 drives so y is between 1-8.

Unfortunately the script that scans through looking for the controller and drives uses a y value of upto 255. Hence you get a ton of errors in your startup dmesg log. Look at the second value and you see it is 142. The good news is that even with all these errors my card (RocketRaid 2720sgl) works fine and has not been an issue. I just have not had the time to bug the developers to fix this minor issue.

The Cam status errors below is it normal to see these on these cards? I'm actually tempted to go get two M1015's after reading through the forum but would prefer to have a bit of time before I do if possible.

Your card has an LSI SAS1 controller. Assuming no hardware defects, it should be fine if you're comfortable with the 2TB per drive limit.

I'm afraid you'll just have to troubleshoot the problem.

You have to first determine if the card you have is a Rocket 2720sgl or the 'RocketRaid' 2720sgl. If it is the later than it will work with FreeNas 9.3 but you will not be able to use the smartd or have the GUI show the drive serial numbers. I think I am one of the last hold outs still using this card with no problems and you will need to see the post #8 above to get your card going. Please note that Highpoint is no longer offering a separate Raid and Non-raid bios, but if you flash v1.12.0 with the 0=0 parameter it acts like a non-raid card and there is no raid bios display or boot delay. To reverse just flash again without the extra parameter.

I have updated my card firmware to version v1.12.0 which is the latest version offered on the Highpoint Tech website without any problems (was on version 1.5 before). FreeBSD and FreeNAS have recently received updated drivers from Highpoint that have fixed some errors and those pesky CAM control errors are gone including the 254 iterations of invalid CAM invalid target ID.

Once again if you already have a RocketRaid 2720sgl you can make it work with FreeNAS but I would not buy one if I was looking for a card to buy, but go for the M1015 instead.

The card is a rocketraid 2720SGL. I am running FB ECC Dimms in the motherboard.

I'm running two raid cards and using the onboard sata ports. The second card is a crossflashed PERC6 in IT mode.

I did flash the 2720 with the 0=0 command and that actually resolved one of the issues I was having with booting with the option rom enabled. I had previously disabled the option rom to get around this.

I changed out the cables to check them and have swapped all the backplanes around so that the ports with an error should be different if its the backplane causing the issue but it appears to be the card as thats the only thing that hasn't been changed.
