Hello,

Well it has finally happened - I apparently have had a hard fail. I have nine (9) drives in the volume. How do I determine which physical drive has to be replaced? After I replace the drive, what should I do?

Thanks,

Mike

Here's the output of zpool status

[root@server] ~# zpool status

'zpool replace'.

The WebGUI should display the serial number of all drives. Pick the one which displays as REMOVED and find it in your physical box based on the labels on the disks. If the S/N is not displayed in the GUI any more, you'll obviously need to through all physical disks until you see an unknown S/N ;)

After that just follow the procedure for replacing a failed drive as described in the FreeNAS manual. Note that you can skip off-lining the drive and directly use the replace functionality when you have successfully swapped the disks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I misspoke in my previous email in that I only have eight (8) drives in the pool. The ninth drive is the boot drive (an SSD).

I checked the GUI (View Disks) and all the drives are listed (except the SSD), but none say REMOVED?

I'm using FreeNAS-9.2.1.1-RELEASE-x64 (0da7233). Does that make a difference?

The version is recent enough that it shouldn't make a difference.

The output provided by you indicates that the pool contains nine drives, of which one is missing / has been disconnected. The GUI should reflect the output of zpool status. Is the pool status HEALTHY in the web GUI?
Can you post a screenshot of the volume details?

Next time you paste something from the shell, please use [code]-tags, so that the formatting doesn't break. It's quite important for the interpretation of the zpool status output.

Boy, am I stupid. I just remembered that when I built the server I made a list of the drive locations to serial numbers...all I had to do is check which one was missing from the GUI. You're right I have 9 drives...i found the one that failed.

I just read the manual for replacing a failed drive...doesn't seem too difficult. Off to buy a new drive...

Thanks much for the help!

Mike
