You don't want to delete the bad drive. You go to
Storage and View Disks for that volume
Find the serial number (write it down)
Power down
Remove the bad drive (check serial number)
Put new drive in,
Boot system
Go back to the GUI
View Volume
View Disks
Click REPLACE on the bad drive
Wait for it to 'resilver' (copy data)

That's it unless I'm not awake enough yet ;-)

My cases have hot-swap trays. Can I replace a drive in these without a shutdown, or is there something in FreeNAS itself or ZFS that requires the disk swap to be done in a powered-down state?

@mouchon - It seems like the 'charming' GUI has a possible bug. You need to try and replace the disk from the command line at the console (#9 from the menu).

After you get the '%' prompt, type 'su' and enter your admin/root password.
Now do, 'zpool replace ada0'
If that works without any errors, you can do a 'zpool status -v' to check the status of the 'resilvering'.

Durk, I'm not sure, you might have to experiment. I think I saw a ticket related to this, but I don't remember if it was resolved. Of course I think you should be able to swap them without a power cycle, but I'm just not sure if it really works that way yet. I just got back from my prematurely ended trip. I need time to take care of stuff, but I'll try and PM you next week.

Hmmm, very strange. What is the output when you do 'zpool status -v' from the command line?

It appears like a bug with the GUI, but with the command line I'm not certain what the problem is.

TO: protosd

/#zpool status -v
pool: Disk
state: Degraded
status: one or more dovices could not be opened. sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a dagraded device
action: attach the missing device and online it using 'zppol online'
see: http : //........
scrub: none requested

config:

 name state
  Disk Degraded
   mirror Degraded
    179903740959 unavalil was /dev/ada0p2
    ada1p2 online

------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I try type this command /#zpool replace Disk ada0p2
But echo show
cannot open 'ada0p2':no such GEOM provider.
must be a full path or shorthand device name

And I try type this command /#zpool online Disk ada0p2
echo show
Warning:device 'ada0p2' onlined but remains is faulted state
use 'zpool replace' to replase devices that are on longer present.

@mouchon

Try 'zpool replace Disk /dev/ada0p2'

If that doesn't work, try 'zpool replace Disk 179903740959'

Maybe try this 'zpool replace Disk /dev/ada0'

I'm running out of ideas. I don't think you're crazy, but problems like this can make you that way!

Is anyone else reading this? Any ideas?

replacing

about:
 name state
  Disk Degraded
   mirror Degraded
    179903740959 unavalil was /dev/ada0p2
    ada1p2 online

perhaps
zpool scrub Disk
since it appears to have found the 'new' replacement drive
zpool offline Disk /dev/ada0p2
zpool detach Disk /dev/ada0p2
