These things have a ton of I/O. Integrated networking, 16x PCIe 4.0 plus 24 HSIO (PCIe 3.0, SATA or USB 3.x). And that's the low-end range. This will probably eat the Xeon Scalable 1S NAS platforms.

…if the price is right. These X__SDV motherboards tend to cost an arm and/or a leg at retail price.
Otherwise, Intel probably doesn't mind internal competition towards 1S Xeon Scalable: These new parts are Ice Lake, on par with 3rd generation Scalable; 4th generation Sapphire Rapids is expected to be launched this quarter, with PCIe 5.0. If the new Xeon D replace old Skylake and Cascade Lake Xeon Scalable, and even soon-to-be-old Ice Lake Xeon Scalable, it's all benefit for Intel!

Same goes for Xeon Scalable CPUs, so I expect it to end up being fairly popular.

Do I need an upgrade? No. Am I excited about a possible upgrade? Hells yeah!

I can understand this…
Although, for a simple NAS with little or no apps on top, the most exciting parts will be the next generation of Atom server CPUs (C4000?) with Alder Lake E-cores.

I'm trying to be patient but I'm finding myself checking the Supermicro pages like I'm waiting for the next NIN album to come out. How long after announcing the platform does it usually take for boards to drop at the consumer level?

It depends. The way supply chains are these days, and with how hotly anticipated these things probably are by lucrative big customers, I'm not surprised they're not truly available yet.
Not that long ago, Intel launched the same stuff twice twice six months apart, to much confusion.

The only server grade hardware I've been able to get was through luck and/or second-hand from tech marketplaces. Where do you guys go to get your hardware, mainly those who live in the EU? If it matters, I'm a consumer and as such am unable to access b2b stores.

I bought from Jacob or Mindfactory or Tonitrus - all of which happily sell to consumers.

Consumer-oriented Azerty and Megekko also sell some server-grade products. For most advanced/specialised hardware, MaxICT is a reliable source, which happily sells to end users as well as to businesses. All dot-N-L
Or then some reliable German sellers (e.g. Jacob) which do ship internationally.

Tweakers.net, hardware.info and geizahls.de are your friends to find (and vet) more resellers.
