write to freenas

with turning creating shares, turning on cifs etc, i can see the nas on the network, but cannot write to it... can anyone point me in the 'write' direction as to settings? i'm sure that a full manual (pdf) hasn't been written for it yet.. but its making me want to go put windows back on the server pc and share the drives that would be for the nas... (not the system drive)
