Hey forums,

I have an opportunity to buy a used X9SCL with a E3 1220 and 16GB of ram for < $400. What do you think of this offer? Should I wait and purchase an X10?

This is the motherboard I am using, but I have 32GB of RAM installed.

It's an excellent unit, works with FreeNAS out of the box, has a USB header directly on the mother so you can slot a thumbdrive directly in for your FreeNAS install, and the IPMI feature is sooo nice. In total, motherboard, plus CPU plus 32GB of RAM, I probably paid 350.00, but in UK Sterling. I know I have four times the amount of RAM, however, depending on what exchange rate your looking using $400 seems a pretty good deal.

I've just found out it's 16GB rather than 8GB which I'm rather happy about HOWEVER this version does not have IPMI. Would you go for a version without IPMI? What about the risks of using it? I have a spare room with a monitor/keyboard/mouse so that's not an issue but the convenience of having it is appealing. So many decisions.

For me, once I had my system up and running, I'm VERY rarely in the IPMI console. That said, it is nice to have it for the odd occasion that FreeNAS is misbehaving.

Regarding your question, it looks like a pretty good deal. The only thing Haswell really offers is (slightly) lower power consumption). If you can, ask if you can run MEMTEST before pulling the trigger...
