I want to update and check out FN11 but I want to be able to restore back to 9.10 if needed. Would that just mean saving the config before upgrading then if I need to downgrade just do a fresh install and import the saved confg file?
Really, just choosing the 9.10 boot environment would to the trick. But if you want to be extra-safe, install 11 to a fresh USB stick, and upload a saved config file there. Keep your old 9.10 stick, and you can plug it back in if you want to revert.

I just wanted 11 because I want to test running Ubuntu server in vm. I tested it when I was playing freenas in VMware but I had difficulty installing the unifi controller in a jail so I stuck with 9.10 when my hardware arrived.
