Hey all, noob here, but I have tried everything from google searches on getting windows shares to work and nothing.
I am using win 10, FreeNas11.3 - I follow the online video tuts and I worked the permissions thing through several different ideas and nothing.
I have tried:
Windows Features Workaround
Windows Account in FreeNas Workaround
Custom and default FreeNas ACL setups
Even something where I went did a deep dive into the backend of windows 10 accounts and added SMB to the windows account
Even tried putting some custom code/text in the Windows Share - Advanced Mode - Auxiliary Parameters
And several other things online and on this forum, yet nothing.

So, when I type in \\ip in a browser it stalls and searches - then gives me this error:
Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. etc.
*I have in the past got "permissions" errors, but now I get the above.

I ping it and it works:
Pinging 108.172.105.163 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 108.172.105.163: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=63
Reply from 108.172.105.163: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=63
Reply from 108.172.105.163: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=63
Reply from 108.172.105.163: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=63

Ping statistics for 108.172.105.163:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms

Seriously what does one have to do to make this work?

What happens if you use \\108.172.105.163? What is the hostname in the system settings of your FreeNAS? What happens with \\HOSTNAME.local if you are using a Mac or \\HOSTNAME if using Windows?

You did enable and start your SMB service?
Why does your FreeNAS have a public routed IP address?
The hostname can be found in the UI at Network -> Global Configuration. But that works only when your desktop system and your FreeNAS are in the same LAN. Are they?

Yes on start SMB. Not sure it has a public routed IP address.
They are in the same LAN

I can ping the NAS as said above and they are plugged into the same router - that's the same LAN, no?

108.172.105.163 is a public routed address. Not what you typically find behind a router or firewall but not fundamentally problematic. What is the IP address of your desktop machine and what are the netmasks of both machines?

First things first. Is the SMB service started? Do you have a share created, and attached to a FreeNAS dataset? Are you trying to set up guest access, or an actual user share? Did you create a user to own that dataset?

OK. Please provide the FreeNAS IP from Network->Network Summary, and your IP from a Command Prompt->ipconfig.

OK, FreeNAS and your PC are NOT on the same LAN. Please provide screen shots of Network->Network Summary, and your ipconfig output.

Unless his netmask is 128.0.0.0
@lilg just ignore, please, I am joking with @Samuel Tai.

Please give us the complete network setup of both systems as requested by him. Thanks.
