Work? Probably. Recommended? No. Use a LSI-based SAS HBA.
Thanks for the prompt reply!

I am dissapointed. A brand new card from Supermicro would have been ideal. But, if it ain't what we need, then it ain't. :)

After exchange rates, a used SAS HBA will cost about the same.

It doesn't, I tested one I had lying around, also one SASLP, and neither works with FreeNAS.
Thanks for the reply!

I am not one to argue with first hand experience. Thanks for passing on your experience.

The only other source I know of for HBAs is the Art of Server on eBay.

There are many cards there. He lists the chipset on each. The LSI chipsets could be 9210-8i, 9211-8i, 9201-8i, 9207-4i, 9206-16e, and more.

Is there a guide which tells us which chipset works? Or which is newest?

Those aren't chipsets, they're card model numbers. In general, anything with the 2008/2308/3008 chipsets will be fine. The 3008 hasn't been in use for as long, but it's still a solid solution and a better performer than the 2008/2308; OTOH the 2008/2308 are cheaper.

Any LSI with a SAS2008/2308/3008 chipset in IT mode, e.g., 9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, etc and clones, like the Dell H200/H310 and IBM M1015, these latter ones need to be crossflashed.

SAS2308 and 3008 are PCIe 3.0, but unless you're going to use SSDs you'll be fine with the older SAS2008 based HBAs.
