I'm sure that this qualifies as a genuine, bonified stupid question but I'll ask it anyway (because it's best not to assume anything): Will the amd64 ISO image (e.g., FreeNAS-8.0-RELEASE-amd64.iso) work for 64-bit Intel systems too?

Yes, this is confusing... I admit I had the same question awhile ago. It has to do with the AMD processor extensions which Intel adapted?? I think that's how it goes...

But yes, if you have a 64bit INTEL processor, use the AMD64 ISO!

The AMD64 iso is for all 64bit installs and the Intel32 is for both AMD and Intel 32bit installs.

Actually there is no such thing as an Intel32 install, its called i386 ;) and is 32bits.

The AMD64 naming convention is pretty much an industry defacto standard based on the fact that AMD was first to extend the 32bit x86 architecture to 64bit, while Intel was busy doing its Itanium thing...

I'm used to the Linux community's x86/x86_64 and i386/i586/i686 naming conventions so FreeBSD's convention is foreign to me. The Hardware Notes for FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE make it clear, however:

Note that there are two names for this architecture, AMD64 (AMD) and Intel EM64T (Extended Memory 64-bit Technology). 64-bit mode of the two architectures are almost compatible with each other, and FreeBSD/amd64 should support them both.
Thanks, protosd & Sir_Redrum!

and Intel licenses the 64 bit spec from AMD.
