I've been working on a backup script for just over a month and after numerous research I can't seem to find a working solution.

I'm using FreeNAS 8.3.1. The script I've created takes incremental backups from my zpool01 over to zpool02 in the same chassis.

The problem is no matter where I put my script after a reboot I lose the permissions and the script disappears. I understand whats causing it, but isn't there somewhere I can place the script so when the server reboots it doesn't wipe it out.

Also the only way I can seem to keep the crontab entry from disappearing is to enter it through the GUI. I've tried /etc/crontab but that deletes upon reboot as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Hi jellybean,

Why not just make a "scripts" or "utils" dataset on your pool & stash all your useful tools & scripts there?

I do that for my daily smart status e-mail script & various utils like bonnie++.

The USB stick is read only. I store my scripts on the zpool and then just point to them there from cron or run them manually as needed.

As a general rule, if you can do it from the GUI, you SHOULD be doing it from the GUI. Otherwise on reboot what you did will be undone(as you are witnessing). So only do cron setup from the GUI.
