In Deltona's thread on headless installation

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/headless-install-no-kb-no-mon-only-serial-how.7487/

there is a reference in the last posting that the final details of his "fix" would shortly (then, i.e. in 2012) be added to the wiki. Unfortunately, I have failed totally in my endeavour to find this wiki, so could anybody enlighten me to its whereabouts? I read the manual for version 9.3, but found no mentioning of the problem solution for headless installation as far as I could tell.

The wiki was deprecated last spring (olddoc.freenas.org).

OK. When clicking on the hyperlink to the release notes from December 14, 2012, I found something called a wiki, but seem to be empty now.

Anyway, I have solved the monitor part, but am still looking for the keyboard solution - is it possible to use a USB keyboard on boot? I do not own one as of now, so have had no chance to try, but if somebody can verify that it works, I can of course buy one.

As long as the system has enough USB ports to support both the keyboard and the boot device (assuming it is a USB thumbdrive), it should work. What is your hardware and how are you trying to install? Which version are you trying to install?

It should work. It is a fresh hardware setup after reading up on several guides on the matter (so hoping to avoid a lot of unnecessary mishaps):

Motherboard: Supermicro A1SRi-2758F (embedded Intel Atom CPU)
RAM: 2 x 8GB DDR3-1600 ECC
HDD: 2 x HGST 2 TB
FreeNAS: 9.3 (stable) on USB thumbdrive

I have more than one USB port available, so guessing it should work then. Hence, will try to source (borrow or buy) the keyboard shortly and try.

Problem solved with USB keyboard in a USB 2.0 port. However, this created another problem as I think I am out of USB 2.0 ports, but I will post this as another thread instead as this one is solved.

Why do you even need a keyboard? You have IPMI!

Right so you are! Did not manage to successfully log on earlier so reasoned that I perhaps could not access it so early in the process (although it sounded illogical). I missed that fact that the factory set user/pw was case sensitive though...so now I have advanced. Thanks!

It's also limited to 19 characters, most likely, so pay attention to that when changing the default password.
