Replacing my ASRock Rack board with a Supermicro. Trying to use my 'old' but low hours DDR3 ECC ram, I seem to need a LGA 1150 processor to fit the X10-SL7-F board.

What is the currently recommended processor for this board?

Is Intel still shipping Xeon E3-1231 V3 processors? Availability seems to be a problem. Do you go with a 'refurbished' (used) processor?

I picked up the system board, CPU and RAM for my system on eBay and am very happy with it all.

Ebay is your friend if you want socket 1150.

Original post, Feb 2018. At that time, these were the components I used in both my primary and backup systems and I have been very happy with them:

Board - $59.99 - Super Micro X9SCM-F, LGA 1155, Intel C204, Micro ATX server motherboard with Heatsink & I/O Shield
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TESTED-Sup...w-E97378-001-Heatsink-I-O-Shield/332618846867

CPU - $98.95 - Intel Xeon E3-1230V2 SR0P4 3.30GHz Processor
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon...-LGA1155-bx80637E31230V2-v2-1230/332596382066

HBA - $56.55 - Dell H310 6Gbps SAS HBA LSI 9211-8i P20 IT Mode ZFS FreeNAS unRAID High Air Flow
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-H310-...0-IT-Mode-for-ZFS-FreeNAS-unRAID/162834659601

about $216 for the lot at current prices.

Unless you already bought the board, you might want to go with the x9 board because there is no significant improvement between x9 and x10.

I am happy with the G3258 chip in the X10SL7-F board

The chip needed depends on your use case

CPU's outlast every other component, used is fine

Have Fun

Chris is spot on in his assessment; the x10 board you've chosen requires unregistered memory (UDIMMs). If you go with that board make sure you have UDIMMs. If you don't have UDIMMs, the X9 which supports registered DDR3 EEC (RDIMMs) is much more cost effective. As an example on eBay, 32GB of ECC RDIMM is available for about $100. 32GB of DDR3 EEC UDIMM is between $250 and $350. The X9 or even X8 boards will actually support more memory than the X10 you have chosen. The X10 maxes out at 32GB of RAM. My dual socket X8 board supports up to 192GB and my X9 supports up to 256GB of RDIMM. I have an X10 board on my current NAS and am moving to an X9 or X8 for my next build with 12 disks. The X9 and X8 also use cheaper CPUs. My 4 core E5640 in my X8 was less than $10. My 8 core E5-2650 V1 in my X9 was less than $70.

Good luck on your build!

That is one of the big differences between a Xeon E3 CPU and a Xeon E5 CPU. Even in the X9 boards, the E3 processors only support UDIMM (un-registered) memory. The board I pointed out is only able to operate with plain UDIMM or ECC UDIMM, but not with registered (RDIMM or LRDIMM) memory.

I learn something new every day here. My board X9SRL-F it only supports E5-2600 v1 and v2 and E5-1600. It's 8 DIMM slots support up to 512GB of LRIMM. The only restriction is the 1600 does not support LRIMMs. It was available on eBay for $150 and I could not resist. I am now torn as to deploy in my new deployment; my X8 board or my X9. One system is going to my work and one is stay home.

One extreme idea I am considering is deploying the X9 in in my old Antec 900 which has 9x 5.25 inch bays. I currently have 2 iStar trayless cages which hold 4 disks in 3 slots. It seems these cages support SATA or SAS disks. If the 10" fan in the Antec can keep the whole system cool 12 to 15 (with iStar 5in 3 cages) disks in a mid tower would make the ultimate appliance.

We have not heard back from the OP. What do you think about any of the suggestions here?

If you are sure that you want the board you mentioned, this is a CPU that I know will work with it. I use the v2 revision of this chip in my X9 board and I have no trouble transcoding videos in Plex and doing all the other things I want to do with FreeNAS.

Or were you interested in a lower power option?

I'm using this board right now. I have an E3-1231V3 (4 cores, 8 threads) it's a great combo. Bought mine at newegg because of will-call here in Indy.

If you have the -O variant like me, be sure to flash the onboard controller to IT mode.

Sorry for the delay in response.

Some good ideas, thanks. I did try to mine the forum here for info before moving forward, but it seems that there is a lot less building (and talking about it) than 20 months ago when I started on FreeNAS.

I want something that just *work* and is reliable from the HW point of view.

I did order the Supermicro X10SL7-F mobo new from NewEgg for $216. I have had poor luck with eBay mobos. And decent luck with eBay processors.

I have 32 gb of RAM from my ASRock system: 2x Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Server Memory Model CT2KIT102472BD160B

I'm not *sure* this is the right RAM, but I think these were described as UDIMMs somewhere. Any feedback? I saw somewhere where somebody was using Crucial 8 GB modules in their X10SL7-F.

I ordered a new E3-1231V3 processor online as 'in-stock' ($305) only to be informed at checkout that it was on backorder. I called the vendor asking a. if it was new and b. if it was available. They 'checked' online and said that Intel was still shipping these. When I went to the Intel site it showed 'Discontinued'. The vendor said it would ship 2/20/2018 so .... Still no confirmation, so I'm up in the air on this.

Any E3 1200 series should work. That combo on newegg was only 502.88 when I ordered. I'm using kingston version of the same ram:

For the tiny speed difference between that processor and the v3 CPU that I suggested from eBay, you should cancel that and get the eBay part. No point paying all that money and having to wait.
The one I suggested is a 3.3GHz for $169.99 and free shipping. Here is the link again:

PS. That memory should be fine.

Wow, 305 $ for a new old processor, that's really too much. You should listen to @Chris Moore and save some money that you could invest in more RAM or for a nice meal.

A used processor should really work just fine.

Thanks for the feedback on the RAM.

OK, you convinced me. Could not find one through a mainstream vendor to get a "real" warranty and the savings was enough to cover any likely issues. The referenced $170. part has been ordered. Processor speed was not an issue. I had a spare heat sink that should work.

FWIW, Intel had priced that processor at $240 suggested retail for the boxed version, but they are scarce now (new in box). A NIB retail unit (1231 V3) was $360 with tax through Amazon.

I've made a mistake with RAM or let's say I didn't take a good look. It seems that your mainboard is maxed out already with 32GB. So no more RAM.

Then use the money for a nice meal. Damn, not my day ...

I don't know what was wrong with my eyes yesterday. But now I see that you got 2 x 8 GB of RAM and not 2 x 16 GB. So another 16 GB would be an option like I've told you. Maybe the weird letters you've used for the RAM had a funny effect on my tired eyes ... who knows.

16GB UDIMMs will absolutely NOT work with an X10SL7-F (or anything prior to Skylake, for that matter).
