So I've noticed this issue that has recently popped up, and I hope I'm posting this in the right section but i notices some of my media files weren't showing up in KODI and went to check.. Attached is one of the folders that is missing things, over SMB there are a bunch of things named weirdly while ssh'd into the server the same folder has all the file names correct

Now the files get downloaded through transmission (running in a jail on the server) and renamed and sorted with Emby (also running in a jail on the server)

Is there any way to get the SMB shares to get the correct names?

Those look like the auto generated 8.3 file names... Yes, from pre Windows 95, and yes, they still supported for backwards compatibility. Some people still use old software on new systems that can't handle the longer file names.

As to why you're seeing them, I have no clue. Have you changed any settings lately? Either on the Samba service, or from within Windows?

You can't have a colon in a windows file name. Remove that and it will show up correctly.

Ah, totally missed that... Yup, Windows doesn't like the colon, so it reverted to displaying the safe 8.3 name. Now it makes sense.

no settings have changed, also not sure why emby just started doing that, I'll have to check settings

That fixed it thanks I probably would have been banging my head for a while, must have been something EMBY did for an update cycle
