Ok so here is the deal. New here, read pretty much for the whole day yesterday on this. Managed to scrape together the drives and ram, but kinda slummin it in terms of how its all put together lol

Of all my systems, only 1 (except for my rig) supported 8gb, so no choice but to work with that. Its a Core2 Duo 2.13 ghz which from what I read is more than enough for the nas.

I have 3 sata ports on my motherboard, this is a lenovo system :)

1x 500gb to be its own volume
2x80gb sata
2x80gb pata pci riser card via vt6421

hardware IDs for the card are
atapci0@pci0:10:9:0: class=0x010400 card=0x32491106 chip=0x32491106 rev=0x50

so it sees the card. for testing purposes I am running a single IDE drive in cable select mode on the ide channel. Both the drive and cable are working pulls from another machine.

I just need something small and reliable to back up important pictures, documents etc. I was going to raidz the 4x80 and end up with 240gb to do that. Plenty enough for my purpose, and I get a good nas and learning curve.

So please tell me.. why is the system not taking my card?

I'm with Eric. Bottom line is while it "works" I wouldn't call it "reliable" unless your hardware falls under the kind of thing we recommend in the forum hardware recommendations stickies.
