I'm running FreeNAS on a HP Microserver with a RAIDZ1 pool (yes, I know, it will fail and I will cry!) and everything is running fine and dandy. I've even got Plex Media Server and PlexConnect (DNS redirect) running in jails so can at last switch off my iMac from time to time.

I've connected a USB drive to the box and have configured it as a seperate UFS volume, and would ideally like to use rsync to backup my really important stuff (documents, pictures, music, etc.) on the zfs pool to the USB UFS volume?

Is this possible, or is there another background solution, or is this just a really bad idea?

Thanks

Should work - as soon as the hard drive is mounted you can rsync onto it.
