USB IO failure

Hi,

What is your experience with an attached USB disk as the primary storage volume for files? I have failed to find answers whether it's recommended or not.

With my newly installed (and first) Freenas setup I wish to base it on a Intel Nuc with a 3tb disk attached to one of the USB 3.0 interfaces.
Due to the limited hardware case, I'm having the disk connected externally. I have one more spare disk I’ll like to connect the similar way (two in total if everything goes as I wish).

I'm creating a volume with datasets. On top I have created smb share. So far so good. Transfer of data is the dubious part.

Please help to understand the error messages I have received (attached pictures). IO is clearly an issue, but is there any solution other than building a dedicated Freenas with all disks internally (rather than USB connected)?

USB attached storage is not recommended for the reason you are experiencing and others.

Hi Cjmdk,

This is surely not a recommended config and for a ton of reasons.

One is that a single drive pool does not offer any redundancy. Another is that USB is not a reliable connector as you are experiencing right now. Third you already wrote about and his speed. A fourth reason is that typical USB drives are desktop drives and not NAS drives. Unless you physically replaced the HDD in that casing, that drive is not meant to stay up and running 24 / 7 and should it parks every now and then, FreeNAS will burn it in no time.

This setup is a clear No-Go...
