Hi,

I have been running my freeNAS server for a year now and I'm loving the thing, does everything that it needs to do.
it has the following specs:
  • 2x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5570
  • 26 GB RAM
  • 12x 3TB disks (10 in RAIDz2 + 2 spares)

Recently I started working with docker at work, and I noticed that I could really use it for my private projects as well,
after some research I found out that the 5500 series of intel doesn't have the `Unrestricted Guest` feature.

So I'm looking for a new processors to replace the old ones.
But I have no clue what the best 'Bang for the buck' processors there are right now.

Is there anyone that could help me?
Thanks in advance.

It would help if you specified the system/motherboard you are using. That said, your options are rather limited at this point. You might have some options if your motherboard supports X5600 series chips, but you need to know if it supports the higher wattage CPU's. This might give you something to look at.

X5570 is a quad core nehalem processor. Generally speaking, you need to upgrade to a Westmere processor. And generally speaking there are upgrades available cheap on eBay

You should get a hexcore one :)

At a guess, the X5680 is probably pretty good. It’s what I upgraded my Mac Pro 2009 with. And only 50-100$ on eBay.

I’d check compatibility, then just start at the highest (X5690) and down on eBay until you find a price/perf compromise you’re happy with.
