I attempted to upgrade from 9.10.2-U6 to stable 11.1 via the GUI upgrade today, but upgrade seems to fail or not initialize at all.

Upgrade system keeps asking me to change the boot to 11.1 and reboot but that seems to have no effect and the system boots into 9.10 and the updates stay in the list of pending updates.

For some reason 11.1 doesn't show up in grub boot menu and that might be the reason? There is no upgrade error log at /data/.

I think i should retry applying the updates but the gui doesn't let me do that. How can I proceed with 11.1 upgrade?

Paste the output of beadm list. Also, any errors in /var/log/messages around the time of the upgrade?

Here is the beadm list output for most recent entries

Code:
9.10.2-U4 - - 646.0M 2017-05-26 10:57 9.10.2-U4
9.10.2-U5 - - 646.0M 2017-06-27 18:05 9.10.2-U5
9.10.2-U6 NR / 7.0G 2017-07-27 13:28 9.10.2-U6
11.1-U5 - - 16.2M 2018-07-09 18:46 11.1-U5

Seems like the size of 11.1-u5 is quite small and that indicates failed update?

No apparent update errors in messages. Only error around time of the upgrade was some http request error:

Code:
manage.py: [rollbar:1097] Exception while posting item ConnectionError(MaxRetryError("HTTPSConnectionPool(host='
api.rollbar.com', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: /api/1/item/ (Caused by NewConnectionError('<requests.packages.urllib3.c
onnection.VerifiedHTTPSConnection object at 0x8194d78d0>: Failed to establish a new connection: [Errno 61] Connection refused',))",)
,)

Try deleting the U5 boot environment and updating again. It looks like the connection was lost part way through the upgrade.
