I am looking to build a FreeNAS to replace my Seagate GoFlex 2TB NAS.

I was looking around on these forums, and the FreeNAS® Quick Hardware Guide looked really promising, but it is a bit old/outdated. Has it been updated?

I don't need anything mission critical, but I would like to get something with ~10TB of storage that can be upgraded to 20-25TB by adding more drives latter. I would also prefer something with redundancy/recovery capabilities. I would like to spend ~$1,000 (Is that a reasonable budget?).

The hardware guide really dons't need to be updated that often because you can build a perfectly good FreeNAS server with hardware that is 3 or 4 generations old. I often suggest that people buy older hardware to save cash on the upfront cost of getting into a really good server.
