Could someone please have a closer look onto this diagramm.

is it a good idea to have one big CIFS share or better to split it on the datasets (Movies, backups, files, guest upload)

feedback much appriciated

BR

EDIT: the purpose of the PDF is to have it as vector grafics to zoom till infinity. if you have doubt, upload it on virustotal.com or use .png

One of the main reasons to split that data is because you want/need to take advantage of dataset features. Some things that come to mind:
  • Compression - you can easily set different levels of compression on different datasets, which might be appropriate depending on the data in that dataset. For example, you might want to highly compress your movies, but not your backups, or vice versa.
  • Quotas - you can prevent your guests from taking up more than X% of your array.
  • Snapshots - you can set snapshots on a per-dataset basis, so you retain snapshots of your backup dataset longer than your movie dataset.

thanks for feedback, i will try to avoid direct uploads in forum.

@Nick2253 i got the point, thanks.

another input, someone said, it is better to have a top level dataset without any access from a "normal user" (only root)
are you thinking the same and why could this be a good idea?
