You've quoted so many of the possible failure scenarios, that it is hard to imagine you think it is FUD. First, think cheap junk. Second, the failure occurs on the SATA end. Third, try a search engine.

the FUD part is the "short". Look at the cheapest molex or sata you have and explain how it can short out. If you can see a defect as gross as what would be required to "short", report the brand to users to save others time and money. In over 30 years dealing with, making buying and using all kinds of electronic connectors the only failure I have come across is a but joint connector on a trailer, and that is expected over time.

Your experience probably works against you here, as such disregard for quality used to be unthinkable. If the adapter is made with poor quality metal, poor quality insulation, poor internal connections, or poor quality plastic, you aren't going to 'see' that. Then it internally melts, arcs, deforms, whatever. End result: a short. I encourage you to look at the pictures where these parts have failed and provide your own explanation if you disagree.

Now you are seeing what I have said, the shorts are not the cause but because of all those other things I listed as the potential cause. The short is a secondary result, not the primary reason. When determining what caused an incident, one has to focus on the root cause. When determined and corrected the secondary, short, most likely will not occur. When someone jumps to the end result such as short and ignores the primary cause, that can lead to FUD. People need to understand the why of things.
I can now agree with what you have said, as I have quoted. Thanks for the dialog.

The root cause was a shitty part, which in these days of cheapest possible made in china and sold on eBay, can be manufactured to look and feel like expensive parts.

The problem is it's so hard to buy quality these days, even if you are prepared to pay for it, or even when you do.

I have to agree with you on that, but knowing that it's only going to get worse, for all kinds of things, should make it easier to understand and put up with. There is a root cause even for that problem and knowing the truth will take some of the sting of reality away.
That topic would need a new thread on a different forum.

Root cause is important, that is true.

For me, awareness is the issue. Nobody is thinking this little part is going to melt the back of their $200 hard disk with all their data on it, so they don't know to watch what they are using.

You are absolutely right. Making people aware of a problem is what one wants to do, but doing so without giving false, incomplete or made up reasons for the cause of the problem. I might be warning you of a large open hole that you could fall into without going through the details of why where and the when of the hole, if I even knew the details. If one wanted details they could ask and be given accurate information.
