Tutorial for connecting to remote NAS?

Is there a good tutorial somewhere for the best way to connect to a remote NAS?

I have both NAS boxes here locally for the first replication task, but now it's time to move one of them offsite. I have SSH access setup between them, but I assume I will need to set up some sort of VPN on the remote end to connect to for future rep tasks.

I have run VPNs via Windows, I just have zero experience doing it with FreeNAS (or linux).

Also, is it safe to use the root account for the SSH? I wanted to use a dedicated user, but I couldn't get the SSH to connect properly until I used the root account. I'm sure it's a permission issue somewhere I am missing.

I was hoping to find a thorough guide on connecting via VPN so that I could also access the shares via Windows, but I did find what I needed for connecting via SSH (through non-standard ports with keys) and HTTP. Although no joy on getting HTTPS to work.
