Hello,

I have a basic FNAS setup that works very well within my home network. I tried to setup a jail for OpenVPN, but I apparently did not know the right questions to ask and I didn't understand the answers -- frustrating some forum members along the way, I'm afraid.

I've been reading the guide and FNAS threads -- I don't understand much -- but I'm reading this time before I ask.

I deleted the jail I was using , but I still see remnants in Volume-1:

When I select the Jail, I have the option to delete the Dataset. Would that wipe out the jail remnants or Volume-1. I suppose what I'm really asking is what is the hierarchy of the system? Volume-Dataset-Shares, or Dataset-Volume-Shares? I want to create a new Dataset for a jail (like the guide recommends) How to I accomplish that from my current point? Oh 1 more thing, should I upgrade to 9.10.1 Stable before I do anything else? Are there any advantages in doing so?

What you're seeing left over isn't a problem, really--it isn't so much a remnant of the attempted OpenVPN jail as it is a remnant of having a jail at all. But if you're going to update to 9.10.1-U2 (which I would suggest), it probably would be best to delete the entire Jails dataset. When you then create your first jail under 9.10, it will download the new template so the versions all match.

I'll note, though, that you already have a dataset for your jails, and it's called Jails. If you weren't planning on upgrading, there's no reason to delete anything from where you are now, or to change anything.

danb35, Thanks for the quick reply. I'd like to delete the jail if for no other reason, but to familiarize myself with the OS. My hesitation is that the same functions are available at the bottom of the screen no matter what line I select. Please confirm that if I click on the ">Jails" line and select "Destroy Dataset" the only thing I'd delete is the >Jails line and the two sub entries beneath it. Is that correct?

The options at the bottom of the screen only apply to what is currently selected above. This is why the options are not there if nothing is selected.

Yes, that's correct.
