That’s neat. I want some. For science of course. Only to answer OPs questions….

This kinda leads to a question of whether TrueNAS has busted LUN support. In theory you should be able to present TrueNAS with multiple LUN's from the same array and it should see them as "different" disks. I'm probably too lazy to set up a test jig just to figure this out though.

It's real interesting that they came out with dual actuator drives though. The last I heard of that was a bunch of years ago, as they were trying to wring more performance out of HDD's in the pre-affordable-SSD days. I'm trying to figure out what the use case is for two separate LUN's. It made sense to me that you could effectively double the speed of a HDD if you could use two actuators on the same set of platters.

I mean if this crazy monstrosity works: https://www.servethehome.com/zfs-wi...he-nvidia-bluefield-2-dpu-nvme-arm-aic-iscsi/

I know it's apples and oranges but I'm sure this problem is solvable.

Hello @blackwing - I see you found the earlier discussion thread regarding the dual-actuator drives:

Are you able to provide some output from the system such as smartctl and dmesg output? This would be best done by enabling SSH and connecting to the system remotely, so that you can copy and paste raw text output. Please use [CODE][/CODE] brackets, or attach a text file directly.

If you're willing to open a case using the "Report a Bug" link, attaching a debug file (System Settings -> Advanced -> Save Debug) would be beneficial as well.

I'm suspecting that the way these devices are presented (two logical units on a single SAS target) is confusing the TrueNAS middleware.

Do note that there are some potential data-safety risks because of how the MACH.2 handles certain SCSI commands (including a rather ugly case where it will format the entire drive if either "half" receives a FORMAT command) that I've linked to above.

@HoneyBadger - here's the info for dmesg and smartctl (this is for 1 disk only da0 and da1), I got also the save debug, what do you need on that?

I've de-approved the debug attachment pending clarification. Debugs typically contain information you might not want available to random forum members.

Thanks for the information and the DMs.

Some snippets from the dmesg and smartctl output though I think is the key:

Code:
da0 at mpr0 bus 0 scbus6 target 8 lun 0
da0: <SEAGATE ST14000NM0081 E0A1> Fixed Direct Access SPC-5 SCSI device
da0: Serial Number ZKL0H1NE0000C1342BZ8
da0: 1200.000MB/s transfers
da0: Command Queueing enabled
da0: 6675968MB (13672382464 512 byte sectors)

da1 at mpr0 bus 0 scbus6 target 8 lun 1
da1: <SEAGATE ST14000NM0081 E0A1> Fixed Direct Access SPC-5 SCSI device
da1: Serial Number ZKL0H1NE0000C1342BZ8

The S/N is identical in both da0 and da1, it's only the LU ID that differs.

SAS multipath shows up with devices having different targets, but it's still LUN 0 on both.

Code:
da0 at mps0 bus 0 scbus0 target 8 lun 0
da0: <HITACHI HUS723030ALS640 A222> Fixed Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device
da0: Serial Number YVJSDU3D
da0: 600.000MB/s transfers
da0: Command Queueing enabled
da0: 2861588MB (5860533168 512 byte sectors

da16 at mps0 bus 0 scbus0 target 45 lun 0
da16: <HITACHI HUS723030ALS640 A222> Fixed Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device
da16: Serial Number YVJSDU3D
da16: 600.000MB/s transfers
da16: Command Queueing enabled

I have a feeling that the middleware is incredibly puzzled about what to do with the LU 0 and LU 1 on the same SCSI bus:target and so we're getting this unexpected behavior in the GUI. You could attempt this with SCALE and see if things are different, but I don't believe that there's anything inherent that's supporting the MA (multi-actuator) drives inside.

If you can make a bug report and attach the debug I'll see if I can get it in front of the engineering crew.

SCALE is worst. Initial installation of SCALE will only show 1 drive which is the boot-pool of the system, then in every reboot that I will do it will show 1 drive at a time like sda, sdb, sdc and so on and then it will stop showing the rest of the drive.
