TrueNAS Scale Evaluation

I heard a lot about TrueNAS Scale, and it's use of Debian Linux, and on and on. So I loaded a boot drive and tried it on one of my servers. At first I was pleased with the amount of content available, however that quickly turned to displeasure at the useless apps that could not even be tried. Many require login/passwd which is not provided. So whoopi wow and DELETE.

More information is required in order for many of the apps that drew any interest to be looked at. Seems like it's a GAME of "Here's some really cool stuff" now "Figure out how it works, or send money and we'll tell you."

I don't have any patience for that GAME... Played by so many IT Giants You want me to LIKE your product... well make it useful to me and I'll love it. On the path "SCALE" is currently on... It's going to be wiped and forgotten in favor of CORE... which to me is far more intuitive and flexible.

If I wanted to use Docker a lot I might find SCALE useful to keep things organized. provide pools for various tasks, but mount_points (which were pretty useful) don't seem to appear. It's like Microsoft... they change the whole user interface and nomenclature, so it's a TOTALLY DIFFERENT ANIMAL with a steep learning curve.

I've posted many times about Filezilla not being useful because it locks up when Guacamole starts. That may well be a glitch, but it seems to want a login and password. Once called on that... pull it and fix it...

One reporters opinion ! Not My Kind of Progress

Sounds like you should stay on CORE then - nobody is forcing you to use SCALE. A lot of us is actually quite happy with SCALE, and apps (for me it's mainly Truecharts and a simple docker image), even though it's still in -RC cycle.

Didn't say anything about being FORCED to migrate, only disappointment at not being able to really evaluate it. The blame lies on other than IX-Systems. I suppose if you are already Docker literate it's all good. As I said... I can see it being a good place to keep ALL of your Docker style software together.
Seems to me that making sure that a product released would function flawlessly might be a better way to showcase it. I'm not giving up, but merely surprised at the lack of information provided.

Well, TrueNAS SCALE is still in release candidate state. And even when released, I think the clustering feature won't be immediately available.

You may be right that some things just don't work, or work well.

My simple take for a test VM of SCALE is that it looks different and I just test minor things. So, it may be good enough for my limited use. Guess I will see when the time comes.

One last comment. If you like CORE, and want to help out SCALE, be specific in the issue and possibly report it via Jira. Some of the issues I have made to projects have gone through and been accepted, then fixed. (Solaris bugs & OpenZFS bugs.) Of course, I'm a lightweight compared to the real developers...

I just updated today in hopes for some progress on Filezilla... no dice. I'll have to find some documentation and read through it. I look for products to be intuitive. The more intuitive the better. I didn't have much to learn with Core. Took right off.

I'd have preferred to see fewer examples and all of them working. And maybe some how-to or readme on things that are different.

I am not a fan of Docker. Don't want to build my own apps. Having a repository of usable stuff is nice... Like GitHub. I donate when things work and I use them.

I listed my complaint with a group... fell on deaf ears.

Problem likely isn't TrueNAS Scale, likely the app.
