TrueNAS marks disk as FAULTED

So my TrueNAS server emails me the following:
New alerts:
* Pool TRUENAS50TB state is DEGRADED: One or more devices are faulted in response to persistent errors. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state.
The following devices are not healthy:
  • Disk ATA WDC WD140EDFZ-11 9LG37YSA is FAULTED
I follow the procedure to take disk offline and replace and now pool is resilvering with a brand new disk. On the other hand, the disk that was marked FAULTED I put back into the external enclosure it came in (WD EASYSTORE) and plug into my windows pc, partition and format it NTFS then do a surface scan and no errors show. Also S.M.A.R.T data shows no errors and the only thing different is that this disk has more usage hours on it than the new replacement.
2 questions:
Is the FAULTED disk that Windows shows with no errors in need of replacement.
Can the small pc board controller that comes with WD EASYSTORE external drives be hiding surface errors?
Below is CrystalDiskInfo 8.12.9 text output for the drive in question.
Thanks for any help on this.

Generally, using shucked consumer drives in a NAS is not recommended.

Can you install the faulted drive back in your TrueNAS and run a smartctl -t long test and post the smartctl -a output when it's complete?

Can I attach the drive and do the smartctl commands on another linux machine? I rather not disturb the TrueNAS pc anymore.

Sure. Your can install on Windows or Linux.

Use what ever flavor of Linux and install the packages or download the Windows client, although it best to connect to the SATA interface directly and not through a USB to SATA bridge as not all those are transparent or supported.

A lot of us here would disagree with you on that--presuming they're CMR drives.

The OPs drives appeared to be CMR. I understand the economics of the decision. I’ve used shucked Seagate drives in a former life. It all depends on how much risk you are willing to take with your data and whether you have a proven 3-2-1 strategy. The only thing an OEM warranty buys you is replacement cost. You never get any liability coverage for loss of data.

So there’s no real difference between a shucked drive and one sold bare, except warranty coverage. But at the current price delta, you could buy a couple of cold spares and still come out ahead.

Thanks elvisimprsntr for your info about the utility. I will give it a shot as soon as another scan I am doing is done. The scan I'm doing now is directly connected to sata cable in another computer. The scan should be done tomorrow.

To other people in this thread:
The drives I have are not SMR and they are basically slower 5400 rpm Hitachi Ultrastar datacenter drives like these https://www.westerndigital.com/prod...-center-drives/ultrastar-dc-hc560-hdd#0F38651 To me it doesnt matter as I have 6 drives in the pool and speed is not an issue for my setup.

Reddit has some more info on my drive here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/elels8/wd_my_book_14_tb_shucked_wd140edfz_us7sap140/

The linux test is complete. If anyone sees this let me know. I think the drive is ok and only has UDMA errors which I have been told previously that they are not serious.

Those errors are for the first sector, so likely to mean communication loss between the disk and the controller (either the SATA/HBA and the disk or the disk controller and the hardware).

All 4 errors were at more-or-less the same time and were not long ago, so you should probably be looking into what may have caused that (cabling?).

I am doing another test now in Windows which will complete in 30 hours from now. I will look at the cables when it gets done. Meanwhile the server is back up and using my spare new drive for 2 days with no problems so far.
