Hi,
I'm using Freenas/TrueNas since many years in my lab and also in production but now I'm facing this strange problem:

On server Dell PowerEdge R640 every time I try to install the 13.0 U4 (or U5) version the installation process finishes correctly but after reboot a kernel panic occurs.
If I install 12.0 the boot process proceeds flawlessly.
What kind of data can I check/analyze to understand which component is affecting the boot process of the 13.0 Ux?
Here the server specifications:
Dell PowerEdge R640
1 Intel Xeon Siver 4110@2100GHz
64GB DDR-4 Multi-bit ECC
PERC H730 Mini HBA mode
1 Broadcom Adv. Dual 10GBASE-T Ethernet 4 ports
1 Intel Ethernet 10G 2P X520 Adapter 2 ports
2 Redundant Power Supply
At the moment 4 1TB Samsung SSD are installed for test, then they will be replaced with 4 TB SAS SSD drives

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards.

PERC H730 Mini HBA mode

Not compatible with TrueNAS. See

Adding "HBA mode" after the model does not make it an HBA.

1 Broadcom Adv. Dual 10GBASE-T Ethernet 4 ports

Also strongly disrecommended. See the 10 Gig Networking Primer in Resources for recommended cards.

Usually I prefer Supermicro servers, but now I found this server in my customer datacenter....
Now I'll see what to do.

I'm not saying that's the answer, by the way. Just pointing out known pain points. I know there was some stuff that changed in upstream FreeBSD 13 that seems to have caused trouble for folks.

Me too.
I was suspecting that the cause was the 10Gbit Broadcom card, after disabling it, the system boot correctly.

I think that it could be useful to report this experience.
Now I installed on the same server, with Broadcom 10Gbit lan Cad enabled, TrueNas 12.0U1.
The installation was successful (as I wrote in my first post) and now I'm testing it and all the Network cards are working well.
Now I'll continue to update version by version until I'll find which release is causing the kernel panic.....

Now, installing 12.0 U1.1 = kernel panic
...so 12.0U1 still remains the only compatible version if you decide to use the integrated Broadcom 10Gb Network Card

Important Update

Release 13.1 MASTER
File ISO: TrueNAS-13.1-MASTER-202306040714-5b7380e2d.iso

With this release the server starts and is working fine....
I think that the next releases provide support for this hardware.
