Thinking of switching over.

I currently have a FreeNAS build that i've been running for just shy of 5 years. I haven't touched it since putting it together and it has worked flawlessly.

That being said the hardware is outdated and take up alot of space in my full-size case. I have a spare mb/cpu laying around and was considering swapping over to a smaller case and footprint. Any ideas if I will run into any trouble with this setup? Basically have all of this sitting around, just don't want to run into issues and have to swap everything back to the old hardware.

• (I know I will have to update the ram to pref. 32gb.)

• NAS drives: Will move my 6x 2TB WD Red's into the new case and rebuild the zfs

What's your existing hardware?

Your proposed new solution is using "gaming gear" which is generally frowned upon due to spotty compatibility/poor quality LAN PHYs/extra unnecessary hardware, and the obligatory "not ECC memory." The CPU is fine, and would actually work in a Supermicro X11 motherboard. If you have to buy more/new RAM anyways, that might be worth considering as an option, with selling the B250M/non-ECC Corsair memory to help fund it.

Can confirm. I have an X11 with the i3-6100. As do hundreds of FreeNAS users.

Is that Supermicro x11 MOBO a microATX board? If so, many smallish cases exist for that size board that would reduce your foot print without changing much else.
