How do I change the time on the nas? Mine is showing something quite random, Wednesday August 30th 2011!

Thing is I am trying to set up rysnc, but obviously this becomes quite difficult if the time is completely caput.

"Random" I'd find hard to believe. My initial thought is for you to reboot the machine, go into the BIOS/UEFI, and set the date/time correctly. That sets the computer time outside of FreeNAS.

Also within FreeNAS, if you have internet set up correctly, you can use one of the NTP servers so FreeNAS syncs time periodically.

Thats great I forced NTP to do an update and all is good.

Sadly my rysnc has not worked, I cannot fathom how to view logs, the internet is not helping I am logged into the NAS from the command line as root.

What do I put in now to see whats happening.

Its quite difficult to use this Freenas!

garyi,
As you can see, this forum tends to be snippy, snarly, and snotty more than helpful. And it appears not to be moderated at all. So good fucking luck to you.

From what you've written, I don't know if you have discovered the GUI which is not accessible to the local console. You need to use a web browser to log in by putting your FreeNAS box's IP address in the address bar.

Please take a look at the manual which does a good job of walking through the getting-started process.

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard.

I think obviously between the transitional split of freenas something has sorta happened with the user base. People are being helpful but this would appear to be one of those open source builds where one is expected to learn the ins and outs of Linux or what ever before being allowed to ask questions.

Unfortunately in the end I found freenas was absolutely not for people without programming capability, aimed squarely at experienced admins/programmers and this forum is really a testament to that, i.e you need to have a deep understanding of the terminal, commands etc etc.

So I have since moved on.

You are 100% right, and as a moderator I apologize, I'm guilty of some of that myself. I'm as frustrated and unhappy about that as you for a number of reasons:

Users that don't follow the rules so often that its ridiculous to try and manage
No coordination or solidarity among moderators or ADMINS
People don't search and repost the same questions so often that the good answers get buried and make it more difficult to find the answers.
ADMINS that don't want to participate, but don't want to hand over the keys to other admins to fix stuff.
ADMINS that are too busy to help the moderators that are trying to help them.

You know the saying about shit flowing downhill....

It gets old trying to be helpful when you don't get any appreciation, assistance, or cooperation.

Sorry guys.
