HI

I have a server atm running freenas with Raid using 4 disks.

I have bought a newer version of the same server, (also takes 4 disks)

can i just move the hd's and the usb with freenas over to the new hardware and bootup?

Like @m0nkey_ said, it is pretty easy. The thing I had to do was put a keyboard and monitor on the new system and set the IP address through the text console. The hardest part was pulling out the keyboard and monitor.

Even easier if your new system has IPMI :)

Then the hardest part is finding the IPMI IP ;)

Found this thread actually, https://community.hpe.com/t5/ProLia...-similar-technology/td-p/5659671#.UDd95aD-1IA

HP DL160 G6 doesnt come standard, but there is an option card.
IPMI seems to be a remote management technology, similar to ILO

Yes.

IPMI on my server boards allows me to remote control the system (iKVM) over the network. Remotely mount ISOs for installations, configure BIOS, power off/on the system, etc. There is almost never any reason to connect a monitor or keyboard to a system with IPMI/ILO, unless you corrupt the BMC (baseboard management controller) when updating its firmware.

One of the nice features of the SuperMicro server boards is they come with almost a completely unlocked IPMI feature set. You need a software key to enable remote BIOS updates though (ie without plugging in a USB drive to the physical system)
