Supermicro support

I know Supermicro is highly recommended on these forums, but I'm wondering about their customer service. It seems nonexistent. I've tried to register on their support website twice, separated by a few weeks, and never got the email with the password as promised. I've emailed them directly and never received a response.

They do have a lot of downloads and manuals online, which is great, but in my opinion the manuals are spotty in the level of detail and explanation; thus the support questions. Their FAQs can be helpful, but the search system for them is bad; google searches are much better.

Supermicro is primarily recommended for people who know hardware well and want it very cheap. It is not recommended for it's support, quality or ease of use.. Freenas is seen as a diy product for diy people

My experience is that their support is fast if you put in a ticket, but it's a throw things at the wall and see what works kind of thing. It gets the job done, especially with common stuff where people in the forum have some experience.

I didn't have to register. There should be an option to just send off a ticket with the relevant information (at least in Europe, maybe US support is different?).

I see that I received four replies to five emails sent to support@supermicro.com last year.

Are you saying that SuperMicro is very cheap, and is not known for its quality? Neither of these seems consistent with my experience.

That is an extremely precise and very accurate way to put it. I couldn't have done better myself. :)

It's cheaper than buying from Dell and such. I wouldn't call it "cheaply made" though.

I was going to post this in a new thread, and I WILL post it as a followup to my other thread about instability with SM Atom board and VirtualBox and Windows 7, but, since we're here...

I have been having an ongoing problem with a supermicro atom board and a Windows 7 virtual machine under FreeNAS 9.3 and VirtualBox. My first contact with SuperMicro tech support was quite positive, with them simply answering the phone when I called. I had two more contacts with them, and nothing they suggested helped my problem, but it seemed that they were going to hang in till it was fixed. Then I received the following:

I just notice that the A1Sri-2758F board is not validated with FreeNAS so it is not supported. Also, we do not recommend using the board for virtualization application.

referring to that web page, I see that NONE of the SuperMicro atom boards are certified to run FreeNAS. So, you all may want to stay aware of the fact that their support will bail out as soon as they feel less than comfortable.
