Hey everyone.
Hopefully, a easy question (slightly embarrassed to ask).

But, just built out my first ever system with a SuperMicro board for my FreeNAS system.

http://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/looking-for-feedback-on-a-build-for-my-budget.19985/

Finally (and I mean finally) built it together (added 6 total disks at 3tb each).

So, simple enough, loving IMPIView. Its fantastic. Can run the server completely headless.
That said, my question is about the NIC port being used by IPMIView 2.0. I am going to guess that it will be always dedicated to IPMView to be able to power on/off, access via KVM? Not a problem at all if that is the case. I have one more port available on the mobo and I would buy a add on card to add more network ports as needed.

I appreciate the help and feedback.

Cheers,

TCG

Don't you have a total of three Ethernet connectors?

The two that are right next to each other are the real NICs, while the third one is the IPMI interface, which is always dedicated to IPMI.

Yes. You are correct. I do have 3 (two NIC's, one for IPMI). It was late and dark...hehe

Thank you.

While the Supermicro boards provide a dedicated port for IPMI, it is not necessary to use it. One of the features of a true server motherboard is that you have lots of configuration options for networking. Check your manual for details.

If your goal is simply to provide support for a headless system, you can access both the network and IPMI from Lan 1. They will have different IP addresses, but you will only need to run one ethernet cable to the box.
