BigDave recently posted a link to Supermicro's part number guide which MoB then identified the current copy of.

I'm reposting this here in a slightly redigested format. The original UP and original DP guides are here.

Supermicro motherboards are logically named based on type and features. Up until the X10 boards, the first TWO characters of the string indicated the CPU type; now it is the first TWO or first THREE.

Leading Characters (Two or Three Characters)

• X11 = 11th generation Xeon (Skylake, E3-1200 v5)
• X10 = 10th generation Xeon (Haswell, E3-12xx v3/v4, E5-16xx v3, E5-26xx v3/v4)
• X9 = 9th generation Xeon (QPI 8.0 GT/s, Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge, E3-12xx/E3-12xx v2, E5-16xx/E5-16xx v2, E5-26xx/E5-26xx v2)
• X8 = 8th generation Xeon (QPI 6.4 GT/s)
• X7 = 7th generation Xeon (1066/1333/1600 MHz FSB)
• X6 = 6th generation Xeon (800MHz FSB)
• A1 = Intel Atom
• C7 = Intel Core i7
• C2 = Intel Core 2
• PD = Intel Xeon 3000 Series

Number of CPUs Supported (Third or Fourth Character)

• S = Single
• D = Dual
• Q = Quad

Chipset/Type (Fourth or Fifth Character)

• A = Workstation
• C = Cougar Point
• E = Edisonville
• L = Lynx Point
• P = Panther Point
• B = Patsburg with Socket B2
• R = Patsburg with Socket R (X9)
• R = Grantley with Socket R3 (X10)
• S = Sunrise Point

Controllers and Other Options (Messy)

• 3 = SAS (3Gbps)
• 4 = 4-pin 12V
• 6 = SAS2 (6Gbps)
• 7 = LSI SAS2 (6Gbps)
• 8 = Dual Channel SCSI
• -10G = 10 Gigabit NIC
• A = ATX/E-ATX Form Factor
• -B = Bulk Packaging (no cables, manual, or I/O shield)
• D = Data Center / MicroCloud Architecture
• i = SATA only
• E = SATA only
• -F = Onboard IPMI w/ dedicated LAN
• G = GPU Optimized
• H = Dual IOH chipsets onboard
• H (for X9) = Hot-pluggable
• INF = Infiniband
• IBX = Infiniband DDR
• IBQ = Infiniband QDR
• IBF = Infiniband FDR
• JBOD/J = JBOD supported
• -LN4 = Four LANs
• L = Low Cost
• M = uATX
• N = 3U and above UIO, UIO slot present on slot #0
• -O = Retail Packaging
• P = Proprietary Form Factor
• Q = Quad Nodes
• R = Riser
• T = Twin or 10 Gigabit (varies)
• TP = 10Gb LAN SFP+
• U = UIO Architecture
• V = LVDS
• W = 1U/2U Form Factor or WIO (example: X9SRW)
• X (legacy) = PCIX
• X (for X9) = Additional I/O Slots or features
• + = Extra DIMMs
