Hello All,

I am using FreeNAS 8.3.0. It was working alright but due to some power issue, it was turned off (not a proper shutdown). After that it is not booting. It was installed on a 2GB USB. I feel that the OS is now corrupt, is there anyway it can be restored?
More important is that, is there a way I can restore the existing settings (usernames, policies, data sets etc.)? And use the existing Storage HDD "without loosing the Data"??

Please check the attached file to see the error I am receiving.Your comments are highly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Safiullah

You can re-install on a fresh USB stick and import your old settings - of which you hopefully have a backup.
If you don't have a backup, you might be lucky if you try to mount the USB stick manually on a system supporting UFS (e.g. FreeBSD or FreeNAS) and see if the freenas database file is still there. You can find it /data/freenas-v1.db, which on FreeNAS 9.x is the 4th partition of the stick.

By re-installing your data hard drives are not touched and you can auto-import the old pool again. In the worst case you have to reconfigure your NAS.

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have any backup. I dont know if Ubuntu supports UFS. Ill try to mount it on Ubuntu and try to search the file.

And what you mean to say that if i am able to find that file, I will just have to overwrite the existing file and all the settings will be like they were use to be? If that is so, that will be veryyyy goooodd :)

By default Ubuntu does not support UFS. Maybe try a live CD of FreeBSD or Solaris.

Yes, in theory you just copy back the database file (take care to install the exact same FreeNAS version again) and the settings should be there again.

Rather than trying to copy the file back to the flash drive, just give the new install a temporary IP address and use the webGUI to restore the settings.

Please use a new 4Gb flash drive.

Right, I forgot that the config backup just is the original database file. Good point!

I havent seen the restore options, will check them tomorrow. will have to find out where this setting is. And yes, I was actually using 4BG and will use another 4GB for the new install. Thanx for your comments. As soon as I get to a solution ill post you people the results.

P.S I should point the new install to this folder /data/freenas-v1.db of the old USB, is that what you meant ?

Unfortulately i am stuck ... I have to find (or make a live CD) FreeBSD to get the files from the old USB as no other OS is able to read the UFS file system. I have also tried the ffdrv but no luck. Can anyone help in giving me a quick way out ? :(

The quick way out is to use the FreebSD liveCD. The proper way would have been to make a backup of your config file before. ;)

The reason i was saying the Quick Way, is that download speed here in my country is too slow. and it will take almost 3 hours to download a 500 MB live CD :(

If it does take more than 3 hours (+1 or 2 for recovering the file) to recreate your settings, this still sounds like the better alternative.

Sigh.. auto-import... read the manual.... your data is safe without a config file... grumble grumble...

I am going to Auto import the old HDD to get my data back. This is the only solution left as FreeBSD is not able to recognize my USB (gives some error which I dont understand and tired of googling). Can you help me in advising me how i can restore my USB back ? I mean currently it only shows a 2MB partition. Rest of the space (3.99 GB) is all gone. And i cant seem to figure out how to get it back.

Use a Linux or gparted live cd to wipe the stick.

Use a new flash drive - don't reuse the damaged one.
