So I finally got my first FreeNAS box all built and powered up! No smoke was released when I fired her up for the first time and I've been playing around in the Bios a bit. Set the boot order to USB HD only and set the power down for a 4-second press of the power button. Now I need to run some Memtest and HDD tests... for a month...

The only question I have right now is how in the hell do you use IPMI? I'm guessing I need a client to run on my laptop but I can't find it. Can you use the client to wake the NAS over the LAN? I imagine you must be able to otherwise how would you access the bios?

OK, nevermind, I got IPMIview up and running and got her all booted up :D This is awesome! Now time for some Memtest!

There's also a web client which generally beats using IPMI view... you can set the IPMI to a static IP in the BIOS if this is a Supermicro?

IPMIview and the web interface each have their advantages. In general, I find the web interface more useful, but with all the recent crap about dropping plug-ins from browsers and dropping support for older SSL protocols, the browser interface has been something of a bear to use. Probably easier if you only have the one, new, current-generation box.

R5 looks great. You need a 120mm on the back for positive pressure and routing those 8 and 24 pin cables. Looks great though! Enjoy!

That's a good question... no idea if I can set a static IP... I'll have to take a look.

Looks like the web interface can be launched by IPMIView. I'm surprised that the iKVM Viewer isn't integrated into IPMIView. I'm still just playing around but liking what I'm seeing so far.

I have 3x 140mm fans blowing into the case so shouldn't need anything on the back. At this point it should be total positive pressure... I can feel air being forced out of the back of the case but perhaps I should block off some of the open vents or put in another fan.

So far, so good!

Excuse me if I am wrong, but shouldn't Memtest at least indicate ECC Ram? From my recollection it does; but I purchased the Pro version a while back ago. Also, I have to use the older version since my systems do not have UEFI.

Just curious...

Something, IIRC - the "plus version" does not..?

I was wondering that myself but I'm certain that it is ECC despite Memtest86 not reporting it.

That said, there are a few things I haven't be able to find in the Bios. There's nothing in there regarding RAM and there's nothing in the Bios about SMART controls either. I imagine there are a few things I need to adjust.

memtest86+ 5.x doesn't have any ECC awareness at all. None. Also hasn't been updated in years, despite numerous avenues for improvements and bugfixes.

memtest86 (non-plus, completely different software) is ECC aware in its UEFI version.

Be sure to check the IPMI log for ECC errors once in a while. They won't show up there.

Ahh.. Gotcha... Now it makes sense. I have MemTest86 Pro (non-plus) and was thinking of that.
However, just for the record my version is ECC aware (at least it indicates the RAM is ECC) even though it uses the older version (since my systems an not UEFI). It just can't test ECC which you correctly state is only available with UEFI.

yeah, I figured that might be the case. I downloaded Memtest86 (non-plus) V6 and ran it today. The weird thing is that the software reported not detecting ECC but when I viewed the DIMM info it showed both of them being ECC. I sent off an email to Supermicro so we'll see what they say. In the meantime, I'm going to continue with @jgreco's solnet-array-test-v2.sh and see how the HDDs do. I ran the CPU stress program from the UBCD last night for about 3-4 hours and the CPU temp got up to 78°C. Didn't rise above that and all of the mainboard and ram temps hovered around 30-40°C. The CPU fan didn't run any faster than 1000rpm and it had PWM speed control so I'm assuming it would have been spinning faster if the CPU had been struggling.

I am going from recollection. If I have time I will kick off a test on a machine later today to verify, but I would think that you are fine. It just may be me that is incorrect and recalled wrongly.
