There is an extra field after "Volume Layout" that does not appear in the instructions (either PDF or on-line wiki, which I checked in case the book was out of date).

Yet, it requires a value be provided. The help just says “This value is required.” which is not at all useful. The dropdown doesn't have any values listed.

What am I missing here?

I am completely stuck and cannot create my first volume.
The mystery blank doesn't like words, letters, or a variety of punctuation marks.
Searching the forums turns up nothing about it, so how can it be obvious to everyone but me??

Interesting. Post the version and build of FreeNAS (from System Information).

It's to let you pick which disks to use. For example if you chose a mirror and have 4 disks, 2 x 1 TB & 2 x 2 TB, then the drop down should give the choice of which disks to create the mirror from. It shouldn't be empty though.

It's FreeNAS-9.1.1-RELEASE-x64 (a752d35)

BTW, I figured out that the box appeared when I touched the "+" under Available Disks. It is also undocumented as to what the button does, but I assumed it would show the list of drives instead of the summary (3 4TiB disks). It actually set the slider to use all of them, which is what I wanted anyway. I didn't notice that it also added the new undocumented/unlabeled blank.

When I reset everything and repeated, looking carefully, I saw it matched the instructions initially and behaved as explained above. I dragged the indicator to take all three disks, and it worked as expected.

I am not new to freenas, I had a system up and running 24/7 for 2 years using an HP pavillion with 8GB of ram. Pentium III processor. I was of course using UFS. Well, now I have upgraded. 32GB ECC RAM quad core haswell. Supermicro mobo. LSI SAS card flashed to IT mode p20. I have 2x4TB drives 3x2TB drives and an SSD for jails. Although, I read mixed reviews on if the SSD will help. I am primarily thinking of plex here with a few others.

I digress, I am posting to this thread in particular because I ran into the same error in the screenshot above and wish to thank John (back in 2013) for point out that it you drag the disks it will fill in the drop down for you, if you click the + first then it wants a value in there. Since I am totally new to ZFS it had me stumped for a while till I saw this post. Look no further to find someone who sometimes over complicates things. :)
